Digital IDEAS 2021 Recap *Transcript cleaned by Kaitlyn Gastineau 0:00 [Music] 0:08 when we're looking at the role of the 0:10 digital itself taking it seriously in 0:12 terms of its genres formats the shape of 0:15 the screen the cost of the device who 0:18 made the device all these things that 0:20 I'm going to call below the water line 0:22 meaning they don't appear 0:24 in many 0:25 earlier studies because they lead 0:27 inevitably to women and people of color 0:29 how much more generative would we be if 0:31 we didn't have to have spent the last 15 0:33 years of this just like proving to 0:34 people that Black folks are online are 0:36 proving to folks that we have capacities 0:38 and so that provocation to me lends 0:40 itself well to this other way of 0:43 conceptualizing our work these different 0:45 this different way of asking 0:47 questions that doesn't begin in deviance 0:49 that doesn't begin in like 0:50 proving ourselves Black folk have made 0:52 the Internet a Black space whose 0:54 contours have become visible through 0:56 sociality and distributed digital 0:58 practice one of my followers called this 1:00 the Black Twitter stimulus package 1:02 right while decentering whiteness as the 1:05 default internet identity what does it 1:07 mean if we think about Black innovation 1:09 not as the creation of new 1:11 commercialized technoscientific gadget 1:13 to 1:15 exploit Blackness but using 1:17 technoscientific infrastructure to 1:19 support the same Black lives 1:21 how do we get to that space 1:23 of support whether it relies on the 1:26 systemic or not and how do we get 1:28 outside of that space of commerce it 1:31 like relies on black cool 1:33 it wants us to go back into this idea of 1:35 the commercial and what we can purchase 1:37 and buy and get 1:39 versus how we support each other and 1:41 what we're actually like the pathways 1:43 we're actually trying to make that are 1:45 not only the facade of success but 1:48 defining successes 1:50 for and within ourselves thinking about 1:52 these webs and networks of care 1:55 among communities 1:56 how might we indoctrinate bots in the 1:58 ways of cultures 2:00 what might it mean to rather punily 2:02 disable mental health bots and what 2:05 models might we reimagine for online 2:07 peer support communities 2:10 [Music]
