Economists predict steady, unspectacular economic growth
 


After the 2nd-quarter slowdown, real US Gross Domestic Product growth will edge upward and remain in the 3.25-3.5% range during the latter half of this year and much of 2005 and 2006, with solid growth in household consumption and robust business spending, U-M economists predict.

University of Michigan researchers have captured a glimpse of the endless arms race between infectious agents and the human immune system in a bacterium that uses a mimic of a human blood-clotting enzyme to advance its infection.

 
Culture, politics and two very successful movies
 

Film scholar Frank Beaver says Fahrenheit 9/11 shows how culture may be shaping politics, while The Passion of the Christ offers clues on how politics can shape culture. In theatrical distribution both films succeeded beyond all expectations even though, for a variety of reasons, untold numbers of filmgoers boycotted these two controversial works.

Lori Lippitz '79 founded the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band in Chicago two decades ago. She solos on this 1912 Warsaw folk song about romance in old age. The melody is based on a lament sung during the Jewish holiday Purim.

One spouse has been married before, the other hasn't. Sociologist Hiromi Ono calls such increasingly common, mixed-history unions "leaky marriages," because emotional and financial resources often drain out of the current relationship to help support children and ex-spouses.

English is a language often without reason but seldom without rhyme. We like to make things echo (even dictionary titles), and we have lots of words that repeat the same syllable (or syllables) willy-nilly.
