Devotion to Islam not linked to support of terror, study indicates

Personal devotion to Islam is unrelated to support for suicide bombing among Palestinian Muslims, according to a study at the Institute for Social Research. A radical solution for environmental pollution

Some bacteria contain enzymes like the one illustrated here that enable them to live off harmful chemicals that degrade toxins called free radicals. Researchers are studying how the bugs do that and hope that will lead to ways to engineer bacteria to clean up environmental messes.

 
 
<i>Is this where we came in?</i> Talking about the movies with Frank Beaver

In the 1950s, filmgoers entered theaters at any point in a film, then watched until the plot became familiar, whereupon someone would ask: ‘Is this where we came in?’ If all agreed, the party left. But today, people may prefer to save time and money by seeing films like Miss Congeniality II at home.

Museum of Art puts Jacob Lawence in focus

Works by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) are exhibited at UMMA through Sept. 11. Lawrence was one of the first artists trained in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and '30s. "Five Builders with Tool Box" (1996) was a gift to UMMA from Dr. James and Vivian Curtis.

 
 
Welcome heart scan surprises: images reveal problems in nearby organs

The rapid rise in CT heart scans has given more patients and physicians a detailed view not only of coronary arteries but also, surprisingly, of serious problems unrelated to the heart. This scan, for example, showed early stage, cancerous lung tumors.

Asst. Prof. Timothy Cheek has reignited interest in the compositions of the Czech female composer Vitezslava Kapralova (1915-40). His CD Forever Kapralova features songs performed by soprano Dana Buresova (Supraphon Records, 2004).
