Although Ivorian women from most ethnic groups come from a long tradition of independent economic activity, the number of women found in the salaried labor force is still very small. Based on statistics of employment and education and on the author's own interviews with Ivorian women working in the modern sector, this study is an examination in detail of the role of the Ivorian woman in the modern sector. Its aim is to analyse those barriers which restrain the entry of women into the labor force, and to explore the factors associated with success for the women in the higher echelons of business and government today.en_US
