Programs for abusive men began soon after shelter and other crisis services for battered women opened in the 1970s. This chapter describes the history of these programs, how they operate, barriers to their success, the major controversies surrounding them, and some promising new directions in which these programs are heading. It also addresses the important question: are these programs effective in ending abuse? Advice is given for assessing the quality of outcome research.en_US
