Abstract: The hydrodynamic stability of Rayleigh convection in a rectangular cavity is studied numerically. The calculation assumes that the Boussinesq fluid motion is two-dimensional. The characteristic value equations are solved by a Chebyshev spectral method. Care must be taken when obtaining the equivalent algebraic eigenproblem to avoid spurious roots and inaccurate results. Critical Rayleigh numbers are determined for various aspect ratios.
