Net DNA synthesis is preferentially inhibited in Salmonella typhimurium by treatment with the antibiotic streptonigrin. As with other agents that affect DNA synthesis, short exposures to streptonigrin result in excellent induction of phage production in inducible lysogenic bacteria. Moreover, these cells produce good yields of active phage when maintained in the presence of the inhibitor until lysis occurs. The characteristics of a cell line which shows a high degree of resistance to the antibiotic are described.en_US
