Abstract: The non-Gaussian nature of energy loss straggling is examined. At NAL large muon shields must be designed to reduce flux by about a factor of 1012. Fortunately it is shown here that on the long range end, the straggling falls off much faster than Gaussian and the amount of shielding needed is significantly reduced.
