The Detroit Area Study (DAS) was established in 1951 at the University of Michigan as a "Training and Research Laboratory in the Community" -- meaning the Detroit area -- and carried out a survey each year, in which students participated through enrollment in a two-semester graduate level course. It began under the administrative umbrella of the Survey Research Center of ISR and in 1958 the Department of Sociology made it an integral part of its interdisciplinary graduate training.
