The vertical distribution of algae in the moss Helodion blandowii.
Johnson, David W.
1990
Abstract: Two disjunct populations of the moss Helodion blandowii were examined for changes in algal community structure along a three tiered vertical distribution on the moss. It was hypothesized that a vertical moisture content along the moss would correspond with changes in community structure. Community changes were observed, however, no moisture gradient was found. Blue-green algae dominated both populations at all levels, becoming less abundant toward the bottom while green algae and diatoms increased. Its apparent that more investigation and manipulations are necessary before the structuring is understood.
