Abstract: Recognizing the need for improvement of trails at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS), the Mark and Ruth Paddock Habitat Fund was established specifically for this purpose. In August 1992, four students drew from this fund to develop a self-guided interpretive booklet for an existing trail on Grapevine Point. The trail contains a 2.4 kilometer loop (1.5 mile) and a 610 meter (2000 foot) spur. Markers are placed at twenty-one locations along the entire trail; each marker corresponds with an entry in the booklet. The project goal was to provide users of UMBS with an opportunity to learn about the natural and socio-cultural history of the local area. In addition, we sought to retain the aesthetic value of the trail through low impact trail design.
