The functional morphology of the Northern Pike (Esox lucius).
Samuels, Terry
1993
Abstract: The northern pike is an elongated fish with ducklike jaws. It gets its name from Esox, an old name for pike in Europe and Lucius the supposed Latin name for this species. ... The world distribution of the northern pike is circumpolar in the northern hemisphere. ... The combination of the posteriorly located dorsal and anal fins with the low aspect ratio of the caudal fin indicate that the northern pike is an accelerator. ... Esox Lucius is a classic lie-in-wait predator.
