The habitats and form of Lycopodium annotinum and Lycopodium lucidulum in the Great Lakes area.

Abstract: This season I studied and compared a small number of Lycopodium annotinum and Lycopodium lucidulum populations. Allow me to describe the habitats where they were found. Both species could be found in any moist wooded forest within the Great Lakes areaa. Each species would more likely be found in, and would grow most prolifically in specific habitats. L. annotinum preferred acidic ground in coniferous woods. L. lucidulum preferred the deep litter of deciduous forests. The nature of their prostrate stems corresponded to these habitats. Lycopodium annotinum has an extensive, much-branched stem growing on the surface or in the upper layers of the litter. Lycopodium lucidulum has a more modest, few branched, stem that favors being covered by the leafy litter of its habitat.
