Language has a central role in human interactions and activities, and as a result the field of linguistics is situated at the intersection of the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. Throughout our 60-year history as a Program and Department, Linguistics at Michigan has maintained an approach to the study of language that capitalizes on this intersection. Faculty and students explore language structure, history, knowledge, behavior and use.
