Video recordings of lecture given by Professor Catford on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Michigan Linguistics Department, in a series called "The Catford Lectures". The subject of the lectures was Professor Catford's life in linguistics. The lectures were introduced by Linguistics Professor Alton Becker and are a linguistic autobiography. The first Catford Lecture explores his early life in Scotland and the development of his interest in linguistics as a schoolboy; it therefore covers his life through about 1936.en_US
