Mathematical Geography, Institute of (IMaGe)

PRINCIPALS, Institute of Mathematical Geography (IMaGe)

  • Founder and Director, Sandra L. Arlinghaus, Ph.D., Geography (Location Theory / Theoretical Geography), sarhaus@umich.edu
  • Director, William C. Arlinghaus, Ph.D., Mathematics (Algebraic Graph Theory), warlingha@LTU.edu
  • INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL GEOGRAPHY: Mission

The purpose is to promote interaction between geography and mathematics. Publications in which elements of one discipline are used to shed light on the other receive particular emphasis. Original contributions that are purely geographical or purely mathematical also appear from time to time. IMaGe, and its original publication series, were created in 1985 by Sandra Lach Arlinghaus. 2010 was the Silver Jubilee Year of IMaGe.

Deep Blue contains the full set of IMaGe publications. Among other things, there are documents deposited from the IMaGe Monograph Series, a set of book-length monographs many of which are peer-reviewed. There are interactive eBooks in a variety of formats. There Is the complete set of articles from IMaGe's peer-reviewed journal, Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics, dating from 1990 forward. There are other documents from various special series, as well.

There are many references to 3D files, including kmz and skp files. A selection of linked pages (about Blue Ribbon models) are archived on this link. These are also stored in collections in the 3D Warehouse. To access them, search for '3D Warehouse' on the internet (use a browser). Then, search for "Arlinghaus" or for "Archimedes" (a pseudonym of Arlinghaus in the 3D Warehouse, chosen to reflect work on building structures in the Allen Creek floodplain and consequent displacement issues). When loading kmz files of buildings into Google Earth, be sure to turn off the default 3D buildings layer in Google Earth so that the default buildings do not obscure the ones being loaded. If the .kmz file does not load properly, as it may not when subsequent software version change the reference base (over time), consider loading the corresponding .skp file into SketchUp and then saving as a .kmz file from there in order to make a more current .kmz file that might work with contemporary software.

    The IMaGe Map Vault

Welcome to a curated collection of maps on various topics, as a custom supplement to the digital search capability of the IMaGe site.

    Topics:
  • Legacy Bridge Maps. Zip code maps sorted by legacy districts of the American Contract Bridge League, based on 2004 data. Click on a polygon and an associated part of the underlying database pops up. Interactive maps linked in the pdf are to a live site. Archived interactive maps, zipped, provided on link below. Sandra L. Arlinghaus
  • Zipped Interactive Maps Link to page containing .zip folders of interactive maps supporting the pdf file above. Sandra L. Arlinghaus
  • Interactive eBooks (refereed)

Some of these books may contain over 15,000 files. Thus, a link is provided to an external site on which the full directory structure can be used to display the entire document. Those urls, however, are not persistent. Thus, a zipped file of the document, retaining the directory structure of the externally linked file, is also provided. It has a persistent url. For longer files, a link to a summary document (.pdf) is provided. It, too, has a persistent url. These books contain a wide variety of file types including 3D maps and figures, animations, applets, virtual reality files, and so forth. When special software is needed a link is given to a free download site (which of course may change over time).

Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics (refereed)

Solstice was born digital in 1990, before the advent of the Internet. Early volumes were typeset using the digital typesetting language, TeX. The digital files were sent to subscribers via email and the receiver printed out the TeX code, if desired, to produce a typeset-quality journal, on-demand. Selected monographs in the IMaGe Monograph series contain typeset versions of Solstice, printed from the code shown in Solstice. The printouts were made at The University of Michigan Computer facilities, using a Xerox 9700 equipped with special hardware to permit printouts made from TeX. Later, when the Internet became available, Solstice switched to using it as the platform for transmission, writing documents in html rather than TeX, and ceased producing any printouts.

Later versions of Solstice have many files associated with them (some in excess of 15,000). For these, the direct link to the external URL is provided, as it maintains complex directory structure. A link to a zipped version of the entire directory is included as a persistent reference that is most true in form to the original. For convenience, a link to a full .pdf version of the journal may be provided, along with attached files that contain animated .gifs and other linked files that do not directly display in pdf format. All are contained within a pdf package. A link to a smaller summary .pdf (in which not all features are present) is sometimes provided as an overview to the content of the full-featured zipped file or the full-featured pdf file. Regardless of the quality of the .pdf (more recent ones are better than older ones), the full webpage as an html file is superior in display; it is the format in which the material was created, through the first 28 volumes). [In a number of cases, multiple html files have been aggregated into a single html file for directory organization for Deep Blue; the content of the original file remains unchanged.]

    • The links below are to typeset TeX files which is how the journal was transmitted from 1990-1994. The person downloading the TeX file then made printout on his/her own equipment. The TeX code captures many images. To give the reader the idea, links have been added to hard copy images, printed from the TeX file, in Volume I. S. Arlinghaus learned TeX from Donald Knuth's TeXbook (working most of the exercises in the full book) and then tested her self-training by typesetting Walter Welford's Useful Optics for the University of Chicago Press. Below, printout of all of the first five volumes appears on the links, in suitably entitled books in the IMaGe Monograph Series. These books contain images captured by TeX code and printed out from the transmitted file, such as simple line drawings and crossword puzzles as well as photocopies of photographs which would not fit into the TeX code.

    • Quotation from Science (American Association for the Advancement of Science), 29 November, 1991, p. 1291 - Joe Palca. "BRIEFING Online Journals When the AAAS and OCLC Online Computer Library Center announced the scheduled debut next year of their new journal--The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials--they said it would be the world's first peer-reviewed, online science journal (Science, 27 September, p. 1480). Since then, two other such journals have made their presence known to Science. They are Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics, published by Sandra Lach Arlinghaus of the Institute of Mathematical Geography in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Flora Online, published by Richard H. Zander, curator of botany at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Both have been around for about 2 years and are available free over several popular research computer networks."
    • Science News, January 25, 1992, p. 61. Ivars Peterson, in a report of the Annual Meetings of the American Mathematical Society. "Math for all seasons When the American Association for the Advancement of Science announced with considerable fanfare last year the 1992 debut of The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials it was billed as the world's first peer reviewed science journal available to subscribers electronically. What the organizers of this effort didn't know was that several such electronic journals already existed. One of these concerns the application of mathematics to geography. Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics--published by Sandra Lach Arlinghaus of the Institute of Mathematical Geography a small, independent research organization in Ann Arbor, Mich.--first appeared in 1990. Its two issues per year, published appropriately on the dates of the summer and winter solstices, go to about 50 individuals who receive the journal free. Transmission costs for distributing the journal electronically over a computer network to all subscribers amount to less than $5 per issue with the cost of printing passed on the user. Libraries and other institutions that prefer printed copies pay for each issue, and those copies are generated from the computer files only when needed. 'It's all very cheap, all environmentally sound,' Arlinghaus says. But getting the journal going wasn't easy, she remarks. The biggest production problem involved photographs and figures which can't be transmitted electronically in the same, compact way as letters, numbers or even mathematical notation. At present, individuals wishing to see particular illustrations must obtain photocopies directly from the Institute of Mathematical Geography. Arlinghaus also admits that she has had trouble obtaining manuscripts for publication in this still-unconventional medium. But individuals who might initially have been skeptics 'become more receptive when they see the actual product,' she says."
    • As of March 2008, 3D buildings appearing in the eBooks had been awarded over 50 blue ribbons by the Google 3D SketchUp Warehouse and therefore appeared as part of the default Google Earth loadset.

IMaGe Contributors of Time, Effort, Advice, Opportunities, Manuscripts, and Inspiration

Note: when browsing the "Authors" button, the list that comes up includes not only authors with direct contributions to IMaGe but also co-authors of those authors with contributions elsewhere in DeepBlue. All IMaGe contributors have their names on this page. Names are linked to the associated page listing contributions, if available (within Deep Blue). In some cases, a single contributor may be listed in multiple roles (distinguishing edited work from authored work, for example). Contributors to the reprint series, such as to the Michigan Inter-University Community of Mathematical Geographers, are included. Some "author pages" may, in the interest of providing context, list citations or links to works beyond those appearing directly in IMaGe. Stars of tomorrow may take their places in this listing among stars of yesterday and today. The extent of contribution varies from individual to individual; however, all efforts are appreciated, from small to great! (Please report errors or omissions to sarhaus@umich.edu)
