dc.description.abstract | Cribs are the one juvenile product designed to keep a baby safe without any supervision. The baby is left alone while sleeping and while awake before and after sleep. Over 11,000 children were rushed to emergency rooms in 2004 due to injuries related to cribs. At least 50 children died in the three year period from 2000-2002 in cribs. This does not include suffocation on bedding or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths. Since 2001, 27 cribs have been pulled from the market in recalls because of safety concerns or injuries. These cribs accounted for almost 50 injuries and four deaths. There were over 1100 reports of product failures that led to the recalls. In addition, CPSC receives many reports of hardware failures and other problems with cribs, both new and old. | en |
