Abstract: In June of 2008, the University of Michigan Library became the first university library in the U.S. to purchase an Espresso Book Machine® (EBM), a stand-alone machine that automates the printing, binding, and trimming of a softcover book directly from a digital file. With hundreds of thousands of public domain titles in its online repository, and the promise of access to thousands more through the EBM’s networked catalog, an Espresso Book Machine® held great appeal for the Library as a new tool for providing quick, affordable print access to the campus community and beyond. This article describes the University of Michigan’s experience with the version 1.5 machine, including the reasons for purchasing the EBM, the development and implementation of current services, plans and potential for future uses of the machine, as well as the benefits realized and drawbacks experienced thus far.
