Stop boiling, pot! Boil, pot!
A cover from the satiric magazine Dikobraz ("Porcupine"), from May
1968. Dubcek examines the boiling pot of reforms, while two voices shout
"Boil, pot!" and "Stop boiling, pot!" -- a reference to a Czech fairy tale
analogous to that of the sorceror's apprentice. A couple receives a magic
pot, which will produce unlimited amounts of food when it is told to
boil; unfortunately they don't know the command to make it stop, and the
pot threatens to overflow their home with cooked cereal.
Here Dubcek is
pictured as caught between popular pressures for change and fears that he
will lose control of the reform process. The headlines of the news
stories coming out of the pot deal with censorship, democratization, and
the rehabilitation of political prisoners.
