Horton, after presiding over the 1933 Decatur trial of Haywood Patterson, threw out the guilty verdict as incompatible with the evidence, and a new trial was granted. This courageous act brought an end to his political career and made him a social pariah but was highly influential in drawing attention to the gaps and contradictions in the prosecution's evidence.
