- Description:
- Visual information can have different meanings across species and the same visual stimulus can drive appetite or avoidance behavior. The superior colliculus, a visual center located in the midbrain has been involved in driving such behaviors. Within this structure, the wide-field-vertical cells (WFV), a conserved morphological cell-types, has been found in reptiles to highly visual mammals. Here we report our investigation of the connectivity of the WFV, their visual response properties and how these responses are modulated by locomotion in the laboratory mouse. We also address the molecular definition of these cells and attempt to reconcile recent molecular definitions acquired by single-cell and single-nucleus RNA sequencing of the SC with the NTSR1-Cre GN209 transgenic mouse line which was previously used to investigate WFV neurons. We use viral strategies to reveal WFV inputs and outputs and confirmed their unique response properties using in vivo two-photon imaging. Among the stimuli tested, WFV preferred looming and a small moving spot and displayed a bias for upward direction. When assessing the effect of locomotion, we found that only visual responses driven by a looming stimulus showed a significant change. We identified several inputs to the WFV as potential candidate for this modulation. These results suggest that WFV integrate information across multiple brain regions and are subject to behavioral modulation. Taken together, our results pave the way to elucidate the role of these neurons in visual behavior and allow us to interrogate the definition of cell-types in the light of new molecular definitions.

- Data were collected to test theories advanced during a Contested Case Hearing to expand treatment capacity of the City of Brighton wastewater treatment facility. The lake historically developed nuisance blooms of cyanobacteria associated with excessive phosphorus and nitrogen limitation. The new wastewater treatment facility reduced phosphate discharge and provided increased concentrations of nitrate. A case study narrative describes the scientific and legal aspects of the case. Data collection and analysis pointed to the presence of a cryptic source of phosphorus income other than from the influent streams, possibly from undocumented septic waste discharges.

- During its trajectory, Wind spent a significant amount of time in the magnetotail, where its SupraThermal Ion Composition Spectrometer (STICS) measured the mass and mass per charge of protons, alpha particles, and heavy ions with an energy/charge ratio up to 226 keV/e. Although STICS originally aimed to measure the abundance of these ion species in the solar wind, its measurements within the magnetosphere from 1995 to 2002 help us identify preferential entry between the different solar wind ion species. This study statistically analyzes how the ratio between solar wind heavy ions and alpha particles (Heavies Solar Wind / He2+) varies for different upstream conditions and locations within the magnetosphere: northward vs. southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), low vs. high solar wind density (Nsw), low vs. high solar wind dynamic pressure (PDyn), slow vs. fast solar wind (Vsw), and dawn vs. dusk. Our results indicate that the HeaviesSolar Wind enter the magnetosphere more efficiently than He2+ during northward IMF and that the Heavies Solar Wind / He2+ ratios decrease during high PDyn. In addition, the Heavies Solar Wind / He2+ ratios exhibit a dawn-dusk asymmetry, highly skewed towards the dawn side for all upstream cases likely due to charge-exchange processes.

- Description:
- The internet has significantly transformed how news is produced, consumed, and distributed. As a result, the news industry has transitioned from ad-supported to subscription-based models regulated by digital paywalls. In light of this disruption, it’s crucial to investigate not only how news consumers adapt to this change but also how economic incentives shape content coverage. We analyzed the staggered adoption of digital paywalls by 17 regional U.S. newspapers over 17 years in a difference-in-difference framework to examine the impact of paywall adoption on topical news content coverage. Our results reveal a small but significant decrease in local and soft news coverage, with varying effects across different urban contexts. Specifically, local news coverage experienced a more substantial decline in smaller cities (population < 500,000) and regions experiencing an influx of younger residents (age < 40 years). Conversely, soft news coverage increased in areas with a younger demographic influx, indicating a strategic shift by newspapers to cater to digital-savvy audiences and adapt to changing consumption patterns. Our findings underscore the delicate balance between financial imperatives and editorial choices in the newspaper industry and highlight the need for ongoing research into the effects of digital monetization strategies on journalistic content creation, media plurality, and civic accountability.

- We have ported our MHD code, BATSRUS ( https://github.com/SWMFsoftware/BATSRUS), to the GPU. This dataset contains the input parameters and raw timing results for the Paper (being revised). To reproduce the results on the supercomputers Frontera and Pleiades, the user need to load modules nvhpc 20.7 for compiling on frontera, nvhpc 24.3-nompi + mpi-hpe/mpt for compiling on Pleiades. and Abstract: BATSRUS, our state-of-the-art extended magnetohydrodynamic code, is the most used and one of the most resource-consuming model in the Space Weather Modeling Framework. It is ever our objective to improve its efficiency and speed with emerging techniques, such as GPU acceleration. To utilize the GPU nodes on modern supercomputer, we port BATSRUS to GPUs with the OpenACC API. Porting the code to a single GPU requires to rewrite and optimize the most used functionalities of the original code into a new solver, which accounts for around 1% of the entire program. To port it to multiple GPUs, we implement a new message passing algorithm to support its unique block adaptive grid feature. We conduct weak scaling tests on as many as 64 GPUs on two supercomputers, and find good performance for up to 16 GPUs. The program is able to retain 65-80% parallel efficiency within one node (up to 4 GPUs), and 40-60% efficiency for 16 GPUs. Applications on more GPUs have reduced efficiency but remain operationally meaningful. Profiling shows that the loss of efficiency is due to the communication latency between supercomputer nodes. We also demonstrate our ability to run representative magnetosphere simulations on GPUs. The performance for a single V100 GPU is about the same as 140 Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 ''Broadwell'' CPU cores, and it runs about twice as fast as real time. The code can run 4 times faster than real time on 4 V100 or 16 RTX 5000 GPUs.
