Work Description

Title: Convertible child seat MADYMO Model for crash simulations - Evenflo SureRide XL Open Access Deposited

Attribute Value
Methodology
  • The geometry of the convertible seat (Evenflo SureRide XL) model was based on a 3D scan, and the characteristics of the contacts were tuned based on sled tests in frontal, side, oblique, and rear impact conditions.
Description
  • This set of Madymo models were setup with a convertible seat and the HIII 3YO child ATD model. Both FMVSS 213 and captain chair were simulated with varied vehicle interior (sedan vs. minivan) and car seat installation methods (LATCH vs. 3pt belt). Although the models provided here only represent the frontal crash condition, simulations with a wide range of impact directions can be simulated.

Overview: This set of models are part of the deliverables of a research project "Child Occupants in Unconventional ADS Seating Orientations Modeling Study" funded by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This set of MADYMO models were setup with a convertible seat and the HIII 3YO child ATD model. Both FMVSS 213 and captain chair were simulated with varied vehicle interior (sedan vs. minivan) and car seat installation methods (LATCH vs. 3pt belt). The models provided here only represent the frontal crash condition.

The geometry of the convertible seat (Evenflo SureRide XL) model was based on a 3D scan, and the characteristics of the contacts were tuned based on sled tests in frontal, side, oblique, and rear impact conditions.

Model list: Ten model conditions with an Evenflo SureRide XL convertible child seat and a HIII 3YO child ATD under frontal impact are included.
1) FF_frontal_213_3pt: forward-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a FMVSS 213 buck
2) FF_frontal_caravan_3pt: forward-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a captain chair in Caravan
3) FF_frontal_caravan_latch: forward-facing convertible with LATCH installation in a captain chair in Caravan
4) FF_frontal_sedan_3pt: forward-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a captain chair in a sedan
5) FF_frontal_sedan_latch: forward-facing convertible with LATCH installation in a captain chair in a sedan
6) FF_frontal_213_3pt: rear-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a FMVSS 213 buck
7) FF_frontal_caravan_3pt: rear-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a captain chair in Caravan
8) FF_frontal_caravan_latch: rear-facing convertible with LATCH installation in a captain chair in Caravan
9) FF_frontal_sedan_3pt: rear-facing convertible with 3pt belt installation in a captain chair in a sedan
10) FF_frontal_sedan_latch: rear-facing convertible with LATCH installation in a captain chair in a sedan

Model validation: A subset of these models were validated against sled tests under various impact conditions conducted at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Software: This set of models can only run in MADYMO (Siemens), and was set up in MADYMO version 7.7.
