Methodology
  • Recordings onto cassette tapes, later digitized.

  • These 1989 recordings were later transcribed and translated into French as part of a project by Mama Kouata, then the Bozo expert at the government language institute then called DNAFLA (Direction Nationale de l'Alphabétisation Fonctionnelle et de la Linguistique Appliquée). A pdf of his handwritten manuscript is included. It begins with a 3-page preface that ends as follows (addressed to Dr. Heath): “Pour terminer, permettez-moi de vous remercier très vivement pour ces recueils, car en les imprimant vous aurez contribué à améliorer l’étude de la langue bozo et partant l’étude du peuple bozo, de cette race de pêcheurs dont la culture reste encore méconnue des chercheurs et du grand public.” English translation: “To conclude, permit me to thank you heartily for these collections, because in publishing them you will have contributed to advancing the study of the Bozo language, and thereby the study of the Bozo people, of this race of fishers whose culture remains unknown to scholars and to the general public. —Mama Kouata.”
Description
  • Opportunistically recorded by me for possible future study in Mali in 1989 (in Gao) and 1991 (in Mopti), while I was working on Songhay languages. One or two speakers were recruited for each session, and were given free choice of topics. They generally talked about history and customs.

  • 1989-01 features speakers of Tieyaxo from the area of Nouh-Bozo on the Niger R.

  • 1989-02 features a holy man, speaker of Tigemaxo from the area of Dia. The holy man has a colorful and rapid-fire speaking style and mixed in words and phrases from other languages.

  • The 1991 recordings appear to involve varieties of Jenaama-Sorogaama, but have not been analysed. These materials may be listened to, studied, or transcribed as end-users wish.
