Methodology
  • This study was carried out in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF), located in the Luquillo Mountains in the northeastern corner of Puerto Rico (18 19.6' N, 65 49.'4W). The LEF covers an area of about 11330 ha, and the elevation ranges from 100 to 1065 m.a.s.l . Six broadly distributed and common tree species were selected for the study: Cecropia schreberiana Miq subspecies schreberiana (Urticaceae), Cordia borinquensis Urb. (Boraginaceae), Dacryodes excelsa Vahl (Burseraceae), Henriettea squamulosa (Cogn.) Judd (Melastomataceae), Micropholis garciniifolia Pierre (Sapotaceae), and Sloanea berteroana Choisy ex DC (Elaeocarpaceae). The tagged trees had a diameter at breast height > 7 cm, and I installed plastic dendrometers at 1.30 m height following the ForestGEO protocol (available on:  https://forestgeo.si.edu/protocols). I took annual measurements of diameter increments starting in 2014, but this study is based on the period after the drought in 2015. In 2020, I did not take tree measurements due to Covid-19. I calculated relative growth rate (RGR) for all trees.
Description
  • Identifying the functional traits that enable recovery after extreme events is necessary for assessing forest persistence and functioning, yet this is a difficult task because the traits mediating the responses to disturbance may vary depending on the disturbance type and over time. This study investigates the effects of traits on tree growth ­–for short and longer terms– in response to two vastly different extreme climatic events, droughts, and hurricanes, in a Puerto Rican forest.
