Methodology
  • Prior to commencement of the study, the survey questions were written and tested for anonymous and non-anonymous feedback by a small group, to ensure clarity and completeness, and responses used to adjust survey questions. The questions were set up to either generate specific responses, which were sub-linked for further detail, or open-ended. Most questions required a response. The survey was intended for STEM professionals in the United States. The survey was written and posted via Qualtrics. 3098 emails were distributed via Qualtrics, the majority with anonymous survey links. Different verbiage was used for emails: one email designed for Chairs with a request to redistribute, one to individuals in the contact list.
Description
  • The survey questions were organized in the following categories: - demographics: age, gender identity, race, ethnicity, and country of birth - education: degree type and date earned, STEM area - employment field, employer information, title, job duties - measures of productivity including research, grant, patents and site/workplace/lab access - work/life balance: responsibilities and duties Questions regarding productivity and work/life balance queried pre and post COVID experiences. Many questions solicited optional comments and the relevant ones are presented as a table.

Description: The survey was written and posted via Qualtrics. Emails were distributed via Qualtrics, the majority with anonymous survey links. Different verbiage was used for emails: one email designed for Chairs with a request to redistribute, one to individuals in the contact list. These emails, meant to be forwarded, also ensure the recipients received an unlinked site to visit, and thus were anonymous. Since a pre-pandemic survey was not conducted due to the nature of the pandemic, questions attempted to elicit responses that were comparative.

The data set is comprised of four CSV files:
1) Demographic data compiled
2) Family and Parenting Questions
3) Factors Affecting Productivity
4) Productivity Questions

Data are coded the following:
In general:

999 - left blank

Yes/No questions: 1 - yes; 2 - no

Specific Questions:

Gender: 1 - female; 2 - male; 3 - nonbinary; 4 - prefer not to say

Marital Status: 1- married or living with a parnter; 2 - divorced or separated; 3 - single; 4 - couple, not in same residence

Partner's employment status: 1 - full time employment; 2-part time employment; 3 - not employed outside of the home

Have your childcare costs increased due to the pandemic? 1- yes; 2-no; 3-does not apply

If you conduct research as part of your job, what 'type' of research do you primarily focus on? 1- Theoretical research primarily conducted 'at a desk'; 2 - experimental research primarily conducted in a lab setting; 3 - experimental research primarily conducted 'in the field'; 4 - I do not conduct research as part of my job

In thinking about your current, or most recent work in STEM, where were you employed? 1 - University; 2 - Hospital; 3 - Government Agency; 4 - Private or Public Company; 5 - Self Employed; 6 - Other
