Description
  • Healthy full-term infants were enrolled in a longitudinal study designed to examine the development of infant eating behavior. Infant weight and length was measured, mothers completed questionnaires regarding infant eating behaviors, and infant capacity for regulation of energy intake was evaluated by comparing intake between two days: one with feedings given on demand and one with feedings offered hourly. The infant's ability to downregulate intake in response to more frequent feedings was calculated.

Key points: We identify the capacity for regulation of energy intake among healthy, full-term infants.

Research Overview: Infant capacity for regulation of energy intake was phenotyped by asking mothers to feed infants on demand on one day and offering a feeding every one hour on another day. The infant's caloric intake on each day was calculated and compared.

Methodology: That data were generated through an experiment in which mothers fed infants in two different ways on two different days and volume consumed was measured. Mothers reported demograhpics by questionniare, and anthropometry was measured by trained research assistants.
