Date: 26 November, 2019 Dataset Title: Co-evolving wing spots and mating displays are genetically separable traits in Drosophila Dataset Creators: J. H. Massey and P. J. Wittkopp Dataset Contact: Patricia J Wittkopp wittkopp@umich.edu Funding: T32GM007544 (NIH), 1R35GM118073 (NIH) Key Points: - We generated over 900 MP4 videos that capture divergent courtship behavior in backcross recombinant flies. Research Overview: To study the genetic basis of behavioral divergence between Drosophila elegans and D. gunungcola, we generated >900 MP4 videos that illustrate species differences in courtship behavior in individual recombinant male flies courting virgin D. elegans females. Courtship behavior is present in most but not all videos. We captured the videos using four Canon VIXIA HF R500 camcorders mounted to Manfrotto (MKCOMPACTACN-BK) aluminum tripods. Courtship chambers were designed based off of the specifications described in Simon, J. C., & Dickinson, M. H. (2010). A new chamber for studying the behavior of Drosophila. Plos One, 5(1), e8793. Using these videos, we captured instances of wing display behavior to generate quantitative measurements for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping.
