Earlier in his profession, Dr. Cornel Opris went from research into human physiology to practical activity in the field of surgery, to which he was more attracted. He was active both in research and Oral and Maxillofacial plastic surgery, facing unfavorable material and social conditions, exacerbated by the circumstances of war and the relocation of the Faculty of Medicine to Sibiu. This article presents the life and work of Prof. Dr. Cornel Opris, with particular reference to the stage of education, the problems associated with "family, society and school". Date of Publication: 1 Sep 2015 ISSN 1930-7837 (electronic) ABSTRACT The idea of basing clinical procedures upon evidence gathered by observation is less than 200 years old, with the first set of evidence-based position papers dating back only to the early 1970s. The relationship between evidence-based education and health outcomes is difficult to test and may be indirect, but teaching critical appraisal skills may be beneficial in developing knowledge. Systematic reviews have a central role in the process of clinical decision making in practice and therefore should be of high quality, following a rigorous protocol that can be evaluated with validated tools. The aim of this study was to assess how dental students utilized the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) appraisal tool to evaluate systematic reviews in the context of a treatment planning course. During the in-class final exam, students were required to appraise the quality of a systematic review and to justify their answers. Of the 74 third-year students who took the exam, 100% answered all questions on the AMSTAR form. The mean number of correct answers was nine (SD=1.047, Min=6, Max=10), with no student providing all 11 correct answers. The fact that nearly 90% of the students provided eight or more correct answers suggests that AMSTAR can be used by students to evaluate the methodological quality of systematic reviews. It also was evident that although the AMSTAR tool requires less than 15 minutes to complete an evaluation, using it requires extensive training and repetition to achieve consistent and reliable results. Date of Publication: 1 Sep 2014 ISSN 1532-3390 (electronic) ABSTRACT PURPOSE: The primary goal of this project was to describe the level of knowledge acquisition using detailed test performance outcomes of the EBD SAPL curriculum over its first 7-years of implementation at the NYU College of Dentistry. A secondary goal was to compare performance outcomes impact of the full 60 h base SAPL curriculum as taught to 4-year DDS students vs an abbreviated 30 h base SAPL curriculum as taught to 3-year Advanced Placement DDS students.METHODS: The findings for the period 2004-2010 are reported for 1647 dental students (63.6% 4-year DDS students, 36.3% 3-year Advanced Placement DDS students). The database consisted of the score earned by each student on each individual question of the SAPL course's 4 h final examination in which each student read an original research article and answered all questions on the Literature Analysis Form.RESULTS: The major findings were overall high performance by both groups of students (SAPL exam scores of 85.8 vs 83.7, respectively) as well as very similar outcomes between these two student groups on: 1) recognizing research design elements and on interpreting those design elements for clinical application, 2) detailed performance of knowledge within the specific five traditional sections of research articles, and 3) detailed performance across 18 identified research design topics.CONCLUSION: In conclusion, both course formats appear to be highly effective for their respective student groups, but should not be interpreted as evidence favoring the shorter format given the different characteristics of the two student groups. Date of Publication: Jan 2014 ISSN 1930-7837 (electronic) ABSTRACT The purpose of this systematic review was to compare the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) with that of traditional (non-PBL) approaches in dental education. The search strategy included electronic and manual searches of studies published up to October 2012. The PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparator, and Outcome) framework was utilized to guide the inclusion or exclusion of studies. The search strategy identified 436 articles, seventeen of which met the inclusion criteria. No randomized controlled trial was found comparing the effectiveness of PBL with that of lecture-based approach at the level of an entire curriculum. Three randomized controlled trials had evaluated the effectiveness of PBL at a single course level. The quality assessment rated four studies as being of moderate quality, while the other studies were assessed as being of weak quality. This review concludes that there are a very limited number of well-designed controlled studies evaluating the effectiveness of PBL in dental education. The data in those studies reveal that PBL does not negatively influence the acquisition of factual knowledge in dental students and PBL enhances the ability of students in applying their knowledge to clinical situations. In addition, PBL positively affects students' perceived preparedness. Date of Publication: 1 Nov 2013 ISSN 1476-5373 (electronic) ABSTRACT Workplace-based assessments (WBAs) are trainee-led formative assessments that measure the highest level of competence of the ability to do a task. So far WBAs are the only available assessment tools to measure performance integrated into practice. Over the years, WBAs have become an integral part of dental foundation and specialty training. The numerous WBAs available can be broadly categorised into three types. The first type involves observation of clinical encounters, for example mini-clinical evaluation exercises; direct observation of procedural skills; and dental evaluation of performance and procedure-based assessments. The second type involves discussion of clinical cases, such as case-based discussions. Finally, the third type includes the mini-peer assessment tool, team assessment of behaviour, 360° assessments and multi-source feedback, and all involve receiving feedback from a combination of colleagues, staff and patients. This article describes the WBAs currently used in postgraduate dental training and explores their strengths, weaknesses, perceived value by trainees and trainers and how these tools can be used in a reliable and valid way. ABSTRACT Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centred, directive, therapeutic approach that enhances clients' readiness to change by exploring their ambivalence about doing so, thus increasing their motivation to change, and by helping them to commit to the process of change. MI is now being applied to dentistry in the area of oral health e.g. smoking cessation and the prevention of early childhood caries. This aligns dentistry with other healthcare professions in their focus on utilising MI to bring about behavioural change. This paper focuses on how the profession of dentistry would benefit from examining how to integrate MI both in undergraduate teaching and practice. Currently the teaching focus in relation to MI has centred on the theoretical content and less on underlying philosophy. This paper explores how a teaching philosophy, as delivered in the behavioural science programme in the School of Dentistry, University College Cork, Ireland, can provide a framework for teaching MI. Key components within this teaching philosophy are: teaching for understanding, developing reflective practice and student-centred teaching. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S. SOURCE Dental update (2012) 39:10 (703-708). Date of Publication: Dec 2012 ISSN 0305-5000 ABSTRACT Endodontic failures often require non-surgical retreatment. The most common root canal obturating material is gutta-percha (GP), used in conjunction with various sealers. GP removal can be undertaken thermally and/or mechanically with or without solvents, however, no published guidelines exist. Following a literature review, an audit was undertaken comparing current endodontic practice in Belfast Dental School with the other dental schools across the UK and Republic of Ireland. From the findings, Belfast Dental School decided to introduce rotary files and chloroform to its Conservation Clinic with restrictions for use of the latter, although solvent use is not recommended in every case. Clinical Relevance: Efficiency in removing both gutta-percha and root canal sealer would maximize the ability to disinfect the root canal system and therefore increase the likelihood of a successful outcome. Box 85, Limerick, Ireland. ABSTRACT Background: In 1995, the University of Birmingham, UK, School of Medicine and Dentistry replaced lecture-based basic life support (BLS) teaching with a peer-led, practical programme. We present our 15-yr experience of peer-led healthcare undergraduate training and examination with a literature review. Methods: A literature review of healthcare undergraduate peer-led practical skills teaching was performed though Pubmed. The development of the Birmingham course is described, from its inception in 1995-2011. Training methods include peer-led training and assessment by senior students who complete an European Resuscitation Council-endorsed instructor course. Student assessors additionally undergo training in assessment and communication skills. The course has been developed by parallel research evaluation and peer-reviewed publication.(1,2) Course administration is by an experienced student committee with senior clinician support. Anonymous feedback from the most recent courses and the current annual pass rates are reported. Results: The literature review identified 369 publications of which 28 met our criteria for inclusion. Largely descriptive, these are highly positive about peer involvement in practical skills teaching using similar, albeit smaller, courses to that described below.Currently approximately 600 first year healthcare undergraduates complete the Birmingham course; participant numbers increase annually. Successful completion is mandatory for students to proceed to the second year of studies. First attempt pass rate is 86%, and close to 100% (565/566 students, 99.8%) following re-assessment the same day. 97% of participants enjoyed the course, 99% preferred peer-tutors to clinicians, 99% perceived teaching quality as " good" or " excellent" , and felt they had sufficient practice. Course organisation was rated " good" or " excellent" by 91%. Each year 3-4 student projects have been published or presented internationally. The annual cost of providing the course is currently £15,594.70 (Eur 18,410), or approximately £26 (Eur 30) per student. Conclusions: This large scale, peer-led BLS course demonstrates that such programmes can have excellent outcomes with outstanding participant satisfaction. Peer-tutors and assessors are competent, more available and less costly than clinical staff. Student instructors develop skills in teaching, assessment and appraisal, organisation and research. Sustainability is possible given succession-planning and consistent leadership. © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. In dental education, as in all health professions, science informs a basic understanding of development, is essential to understand the structure and function of biological systems, and is prerequisite to understand and perform diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical outcomes in the treatment of diseases and disorders. During the last seventy-five years, biomedical science has transformed from discipline-based scientists working on a problem to multidisciplinary research teams working to solve complex problems of significance to the larger society. Over these years, we witnessed the convergence of the biological and digital revolutions with clinical health care in medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and allied health care professional education. Biomedical science informs our understanding, from human genes and their functions to populations, health disparities, and the biosphere. Science is a "way of knowing," an international enterprise, a prerequisite for the health professions, and a calling and adventure to the curious mind. Science, the activity of doing science, is in the national self-interest, in the defense of a nation, and critical to the improvement of the human condition. SOURCE European archives of paediatric dentistry : official journal of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (2011) 12:6 (303-307). Date of Publication: Dec 2011 ISSN 1818-6300 ABSTRACT To evaluate the degree of knowledge, use and teaching of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) of paediatric dentistry lecturers in dental schools throughout Brazil. A structured questionnaire was applied, containing questions regarding the use of ART, socio-demographic characteristics and academic degree background. Descriptive analysis and Poisson's regression were conducted in order to verify the association between exploratory variables and ART teaching (α=5%). Of the 721 questionnaires sent to dental schools, approximately 40% were returned (n=285). Some 98.2% of the participants teach ART. Concerning dental lecturers who teach ART, in multiple regression model, considering ART indication (emergency versus restorative treatment) the lecturers residents of the Mid-West (PR=1.66; CI:1.13-2.45) and Northeast region (PR=1.33; CI:1.02-1.72) and lecturers who use ART regularly (PR=3.73; CI:2.11-5.59) teach ART as restorative treatment. When the question was about reason for using ART (conservative technique versus other techniques failures/fast treatment), lecturers with a longer period of TG (time elapsed since graduation) (PR=1.30; CI:1.08- 1.56) and also lecturers who use ART regularly (PR=2.87; CI:1.95-4.22), teach it as being a conservative technique. Regarding the patients' age covered by ART (versus without limitation), women (PR=1.26; CI:1.06-1.50) and lecturers who use ART regularly (PR=1.28; CI:1.06-1.54), teach that there is no age restriction. ART has been widely taught in Brazilian dental schools, is regularly used in lecturer's clinical practices and has positively influenced the appropriate teaching of this technique. Date of Publication: Oct 2011 ISSN 1930-7837 (electronic) ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to assess the benefits of using e-learning resources in a dental training course on Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART). This e-course was given in a DVD format, which presented the ART technique and philosophy. The participants were twenty-four dentists from the Brazilian public health system. Prior to receiving the DVD, the dentists answered a questionnaire regarding their personal data, previous knowledge about ART, and general interest in training courses. The dentists also participated in an assessment process consisting of a test applied before and after the course. A single researcher corrected the tests, and intraexaminer reproducibility was calculated (kappa=0.89). Paired t-tests were carried out to compare the means between the assessments, showing a significant improvement in the performance of the subjects on the test taken after the course (p<0.05). A linear regression model was used with the difference between the means as the outcome. A greater improvement on the test results was observed among female dentists (p=0.034), dentists working for a shorter period of time in the public health system (p=0.042), and dentists who used the ART technique only for urgent and/or temporary treatment (p=0.010). In conclusion, e-learning has the potential of improving the knowledge that dentists working in the public health system have about ART, especially those with less clinical experience and less knowledge about the subject. ABSTRACT Learning fine motor skills is a pre-requisite for succeeding in dental practice and it is sometimes challenging for dental students. Most of the methods used in the selection process depend on evaluation of intellectual ability or structured interview while manual competence is not. However, no test on aptitude or manual dexterity is used as criteria. Objective: The purpose of the present study intended to evaluate the fine motor skills of beginning dental students which could in turn be used as a method of selection of students for the dental degree admission process. Materials and methods: A study was conducted among 71 second year dental students at College of Dentistry, King Saud University in Riyadh. A test composed of three parts, writing an answer for a question in four lines, drawing a picture of a smile and doing a class 1 amalgam preparation on a plastic molar tooth. The students were evaluated based on their handwriting, basic drawing skills and their skills in performing the tooth preparation by experts in each fields following certain criteria. Results: The results showed a significant correlation between writing and drawing skills and dental skills of the student with p < 0.001. Conclusions: The results of the current study support the use of the writing or drawing test as one of the test used for the applicants for dental school admission. However, the value given to such test in the selection of students needs further investigations and consensus. Date of Publication: 2011 May-Jun ISSN 0893-2174 ABSTRACT The aim of this literature review was to evaluate to what extent oral implant dentistry was integrated into undergraduate educational programs worldwide. An online search of PubMed (MEDLINE and additional life science journals) was performed for articles published from 1966 to January 2010 using combinations of select medical subject headings. Additionally, the ISI Web of Knowledge database (MEDLINE: 1950 to present, Web of Science: 1945 to present) was searched using "education" and "implant" as search terms. The online search was supplemented with a manual search of dental journals in the fields of education, prosthodontics, and implant dentistry and of the reference lists of selected full-text articles. Surveys comparing different undergraduate dental implant curricula and articles describing the undergraduate dental implant curriculum of a single university were identified. Postgraduate or continuing education programs for dental practitioners or master and specialist programs were excluded. Twenty-five articles met the inclusion criteria of this review. The percentage of universities that included implant dentistry in undergraduate education increased from 51% in 1974 to 97% in 2006 for universities in the United States and to 100% for surveyed European universities. All curricula included lectures (mostly 1 to 20 hours) and 30% to 42% included laboratory courses, but the level of clinical experience differed greatly between surveyed universities. Because oral implant dentistry has become a standard treatment alternative, the undergraduate dental curricula should include its application in treatment planning, observation of placing and restoring implants, and treating patients with implant-retained or -supported restorations. Date of Publication: Oct 2010 ISSN 1355-7610 ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to personal construct psychology as a theory to help understand the process of change in facilitative and mentoring relationships. Continuing professional development is critical if practitioners are to keep up to date with new ideas, techniques, and materials. However, is it important not only to consider what is learnt, it is also important to understand the how of learning in order to develop an approach that leads to lifelong learning. Mentoring, coaching, and appraisal are all facilitative processes that aim to encourage professionals to engage with their own development. This leads to differing degrees of both behavioural and attitudinal change. As a result, it is useful to have a theory that can help an individual to understand these changes and to identify any difficulties that are associated with them. Personal construct psychology has long been recognised as a potential framework for personal development. It has been used extensively in a broad range of domains, including clinical and educational psychology, management, and psychotherapy. Personal construct psychology is a useful theory for understanding the facilitative process because it enables the facilitator to form a conceptual framework to comprehend behavioural and attitudinal change. Its underlying philosophical approach also supports lifelong learning, given its emphasis on an enquiring mind and reflection, both of which are key to continuing professional development. ABSTRACT This study describes the current roles of dental librarians in Evidence-based Dentistry (EBD) education including their perceptions of EBD and barriers to their involvement. A Web-based survey was distributed to the dental librarians in North America, with a 71% response rate. The results showed that the majority of dental librarians are playing multiple and diverse roles in EBD education. The most frequently cited barrier to their involvement is the low level of interest from the dental faculty/student/school. Most dental librarians felt competent in supporting EBD, although continuing education needs in both EBD and teaching skills were pointed out. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. ABSTRACT Aim Advances of composite systems and their application have revolutionised the management of posterior teeth affected by caries, facilitating a minimally invasive approach. Previous surveys have indicated that the teaching of posterior composites within dental schools was developing, albeit not keeping pace with clinical evidence and the development of increasingly predictable techniques and materials. Concurrently, surveys of dental practice indicate that dental amalgam still predominates as the 'material of choice' for the restoration of posterior teeth within UK general dental practice. In light of such considerations, the aim of this study was to investigate current teaching of posterior composites in Irish and UK dental schools. Methods An online questionnaire which sought information in relation to the current teaching of posterior composites was developed and distributed to the 17 established Irish and UK dental schools with undergraduate teaching programmes in late 2009.Results Completed responses were received from all 17 schools (response rate = 100%). All 17 schools taught the placement of occlusal and two-surface occlusoproximal composites in premolar and permanent molar teeth. Two schools did not teach placement of three-surface occlusoproximal composites in either premolars or molars. In their preclinical courses, ten schools taught posterior composites before teaching dental amalgams. Fifty-five percent of posterior restorations placed by dental students were of composite (range = 10-90%) and 44% amalgam (range = 10-90%), indicating an increase of 180% in the numbers of posterior composites placed over the past five years. Diversity was noted in the teaching of clinical techniques and students at different schools are trained with different composites and bonding systems. Some cause for concern was noted in the teaching of certain techniques that were not in keeping with existing best evidence, such as the teaching of transparent matrix bands and light-transmitting wedges for occluso-proximal composites (eight schools) and the teaching of bevels on the cavosurface enamel margins of both the occlusal and proximal box margins (three schools). Conclusion The teaching of posterior composites in the Irish and UK dental schools has substantially increased over the last five years. Dental students in these schools often gain more experience in the placement of posterior composites than amalgam. However, practice trends indicate that a majority of GDPs continue to place amalgam in preference to composite, thereby suggesting a source of tension as current dental students emerge into the dental workforce over the coming years. There is, as a consequence, a challenge to the dental profession and its funding agencies in the UK to encourage more of a shift towards the minimally interventive use of composite systems in the restoration of posterior teeth, in particular among established practitioners. © 2010 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Oral Surgery Department, Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan between September 2007 and March 2008 on dental students of batch 2005-2007 comprising 157 students and graduates. Seventy-two subjects were exposed to theater-based learning (group 1), and 85 subjects had conventional oral surgery teaching (group 2). All subjects completed a questionnaire consisting of 23 skills and competencies with 2 career-related items. Results: Students with theater experience perceived better ability to describe surgical procedures (71% of students in group 1 reported "adequate" or higher levels compared to 38% as reported by group 2 students, more understanding of theater and cross infection control protocols and teamwork value (96% in group 1 responded "adequate" or higher, 81% by group 2 students), higher competence to deal with complications (94% in group 1 responded "adequate" and 82% by group 2 students), more awareness of resident's duties and more familiarity with hospital environment (88% in group 1 and 71% by group 2 students) (p=0.000). They showed more interest in oral surgery as a career (53% of group 1 responded "certain", 33% by group 2 students) (p=0.007). Alpha reliability scores of 0.50-0.90 were obtained for the questionnaire subscales. Conclusion: Dental students perceived theater-based learning as a valid interactive educational tool. Active integration of dental students can lead to a superior educational experience, and promotes postgraduate surgical programs. Date of Publication: 2009 Winter ISSN 1089-6287 ABSTRACT In the last 150 years dentistry has faced myriad challenges as it has developed as a technical profession; but even greater struggles to develop a true scientific basis, one that permeates both the academic and practice sectors. In the latter part of the 19th century, technical advances abounded and clinical practice was empirically driven. The first few decades of the 20th century were a tumultuous time in the scientific evolution of dentistry, and many political barriers existed. The formation of scientific journals, research institutes, and a focus on dental education all contributed to a slow and sometimes agonizing evolution of the scientific development of dentistry. Today, while research endeavors are vast, the dental educational system and its embracing of new science within its curricula may not have kept pace with the vision of William J. Gies to revitalize the dental profession over 75 years ago. We are on the brink of a remarkable transformation for both dental education and the practice of dentistry, one that will require enhanced leadership, a revitalized vision and a passion for excellence to allow its continued progress and ultimate success. Date of Publication: 2009 ISSN 1678-7765 (electronic) ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the teaching of the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach in Brazilian dental schools. A questionnaire on this subject was sent to Pediatric Dentistry, Operative Dentistry and Public Health Dentistry professors. The questions approached the following subjects: the method used to teach ART, the time spent on its teaching, under which discipline it is taught, for how many years ART has been taught and its effect on the DMFT index. A total of 70 out of 202 dental schools returned the questionnaire. The ART approach is taught in the majority of the Brazilian dental schools (96.3%), and in most of these schools it is taught both in theory and in clinical practice (62.9%). The majority (35.3%) of professors teach ART for 8 hours, and most often as part of the Pediatric Dentistry discipline (67.6%). It has been taught for the last 7 to 10 years in 34.3% of dental schools. Most professors did not observe a change in the DMFT index with this approach. There is a diversity in the teaching of ART in Brazil in terms of the number of hours spent, the teaching method (theory and practice), and the disciplines involved in its teaching. It is necessary to address the training of professors in the ART approach for the whole country. An educational model is proposed whereby a standard ART module features as part of other preventive and restorative caries care educational modules. This will facilitate and standardize the introduction and adoption of the ART approach in undergraduate education in Brazil. Date of Publication: Dec 2008 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT In this article, the Task Force on Student Outcomes Assessment of the American Dental Education Association's Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education describes the current status of student outcomes assessment in U.S. dental education. This review is divided into six sections. The first summarizes the literature on assessment of dental students' performance. Section two discusses catalysts, with a focus on problem-based learning, for development of new assessment methods, while the third section presents several resources and guides that can be used to inform selection of assessment techniques for various domains of competence. The fourth section describes the methodology and results of a 2008 survey of current assessment practices in U.S. dental schools. In the fifth section, findings from this survey are discussed within the context of competency-based education, the educational model for the predoctoral curriculum endorsed by the American Dental Education Association and prescribed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The article concludes with a summary of assessments recommended as optimal strategies to measure three components of professional competence based on the triangulation model. The survey of assessment practices in predoctoral education was completed by 931 course directors, representing 45 percent of course directors nationwide, from fifty-three of the fifty-six U.S. dental schools. Survey findings indicate that five traditional mainstays of student performance evaluation-multiple-choice testing, lab practicals, daily grades, clinical competency exams, and procedural requirements-still comprise the primary assessment tools in dental education. The survey revealed that a group of newer assessment techniques, although frequently identified as best practices in the literature and commonly used in other areas of health professions education, are rarely employed in predoctoral dental education. Date of Publication: Apr 2008 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT This study explores the little-understood process of evaluating the performance of assistant and associate deans at dental colleges in the United States and Canada. Specifically, this research aimed to identify the methods, processes, and outcomes related to the performance appraisals of assistant/associate deans. Both deans and assistant/associate deans were surveyed. Forty-four of sixty-six deans (66.7 percent) and 227 of 315 assistant/associate deans (72.1 percent) completed surveys with both close-ended and open-ended questions. In addition, ten individuals from each group were interviewed. Results indicate that 75-89 percent of assistant/associate deans are formally evaluated, although as many as 27 percent may lack formal job descriptions. Some recommended best practices for performance appraisal are being used in a majority of colleges. Examples of these best practices are having at least yearly appraisals, holding face-to-face meetings, and setting specific, personal performance objectives/benchmarks for assistant/associate deans. Still, there is much room to improve appraisals by incorporating other recommended practices. Relatively high levels of overall satisfaction were reported by both assistant/associate deans and deans for the process and outcomes of appraisals. Assistant/associate deans rated the value of appraisals to overall development lower than did deans. Qualitative data revealed definite opinions about what constitutes effective and ineffective appraisals, including the use of goal-setting, timeliness, and necessary commitment. Several critical issues related to the results are discussed: differences in perspectives on performance reviews, the importance of informal feedback and job descriptions, the influence of an assistant/associate deans' lack of tenure, and the length of service of deans. Lastly, recommendations for enhancing performance evaluations are offered. Date of Publication: Jan 2008 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT Practicing evidence-based dentistry is a process of lifelong and self-directed learning. Teaching evidence-based dentistry to dental students is the key to increasing the uptake of evidence-based treatments and practices in dentistry. This article describes the procedures undertaken to teach undergraduate dental students at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry how to produce systematic reviews as a module in clinical epidemiology. Nine selected reports have been summarized as examples of the outputs of this module. At the end of the module, students are asked to participate in a survey and anonymously fill out a questionnaire to evaluate the module. Students' evaluation of the module in the 2005-06 (n= 64) and 2006-07 (n=57) academic years were extracted for data analysis. Overall, the majority of students found the module an enjoyable way of learning that has improved their ability to gather information, apply existing evidence to a clinical question, evaluate information, and further develop their communication skills. This module was also effective in raising students' awareness of the importance of evidence-based clinical practice. It is essential to establish the fundamentals of evidence-based practice during the undergraduate curriculum to assist dental students in learning the skills to practice evidence-based dentistry. Date of Publication: 2007 Winter ISSN 1089-6287 ABSTRACT As dental professionals, we continue to learn ethical lessons throughout our careers and beyond. We may experience them in our day-to-day involvements with peers and patients, or they may present themselves under more unusual circumstances. In October, 1974, at the University of Madrid Dental School, the senior author had a deeply impressionable experience minutes before he helped to present a course to Spanish dentists in operative dentistry. His co-presenter was Dr. Miles R. Markley of Denver, Colorado, a National Consultant in Restorative Dentistry for the U.S. Air Force. Their ethics teacher that day was Dr. Gerardo Zabalo, Dean of the dental school. His object lesson was delivered at the base of an equestrian, aluminum, larger-than-life sculpture, "The Torch Bearers" which faced the school. The sculptor shows an old, wrinkled man, lying prostrate, with only enough strength left to raise a lighted torch upward. Reaching down to receive the torch is a robust, energized young man, who is sitting upon a sturdy stallion. The lesson which Dean Zabalo taught that day was simple but profound. The lit torch of ethics, learning and values is essentially transmitted from generation to generation, as young students learn from their elders, accept the torch from their retiring leaders, keep the torch brightly lit as they mature in their profession, and, then in turn, hand it over to those young professionals who will replace them. This process will continue, age after age. Thus the torch of learning and thinking is passed on. In the world of education, human contact and the continued sanctity of the scientific written word must be paramount. Students must be taught how to read, learn and think. Computer technology used exclusively as a mode of teaching and learning can never become a viable substitute for our traditional interactive methods which emphasize human to human interaction. Methods: Using a parallel group design, 370 and 311 grade 2 children were randomly assigned to the ART and the TA group respectively. Eight dentists placed 1117 single- and multiple-surface restorations. A modified actuarial method was used to estimate survival curves. The jackknife method was applied to calculate the standard error in the cumulative survival percentages. Results: A statistically significant difference in cumulative survival percentages between single-surface non-occlusal ART and comparable amalgam restorations was observed after 4.3, 5.3 and 6.3 years. The survival of single-surface non-occlusal ART posterior restorations (80.2 ± 4.9%) was statistically significantly higher than that of occlusal posterior ART restorations (64.8 ± 3.9%) at evaluation year 6.3. There was no statistically significant difference observed between survival percentages of large (55.8 ± 10%) and that of small (69.2 ± 4.6%) single-surface posterior ART restorations after 6.3 years. There was an operator effect observed for single-surface ART and comparable amalgam restorations. Secondary caries was observed in 2.3% of single-surface ART restorations and in 3.7% of single-surface amalgam restorations during the 6.3 year observation period. Conclusions: The ART approach provided higher survival percentages for single-surface restorations than the TA approach over 6.3 years and is therefore appropriate for use in school oral health programmes. Secondary caries was only a minor reason for ART restorations to fail. An operator effect was observed for both treatment approaches. © 2007 The Authors. Date of Publication: Apr 2007 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT This study explores the little understood process of evaluating the performance of department chairs/division heads in dental schools. Specifically, this research aimed to elucidate the methods, processes, and outcomes related to the job performance of department chairs/division heads. Forty-three deans and 306 chairs completed surveys with both close-ended and open-ended questions. In addition, ten deans and ten chairs were interviewed. Results indicate that 80 to 90 percent of department chairs are formally evaluated, although as many as 50 percent may lack job descriptions. Recommended best practices for performance appraisal--such as having at least yearly appraisals, holding face-to-face meetings, and setting specific, personal performance objectives/benchmarks for chairs--are being used in most schools. Still, there is much room to improve appraisals by incorporating other recommended practices. Overall high levels of satisfaction were reported by both chairs and deans for the process and outcomes of appraisals. Qualitative data showed some convergence of opinions about appraisals with the notable exception of informal feedback. We explore some implications of these results, especially as they relate to improving performance appraisals. Dental students have had to absorb increased tuition fees at both the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate levels. Existing debt and high tuition fees may adversely influence a potential candidate's decision to enrol in dental school. Likewise, debt incurred during the minimum 2 years of pre-dental education adds to the future debt load of dental graduates. It seems that few dental students can remain debt-free during their dental education, although data are lacking about the extent of debt among dental students and its impact on their career decisions. Government statistics focus primarily on tuition costs for baccalaureate-degree students. Tuition and clinic-related fees constitute a significant proportion of costs for dental students; moreover, university administrations perceive dentistry as an expensive curriculum. This first article of a 4-part series examines debt among dental students, both nationally and internationally. © J Can Dent Assoc 2006. Date of Publication: Oct 2005 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT This review finds that college GPA and DAT scores provide dental schools in the United States and Canada with defensible methods for selecting students. College GPA seems the best predictor of academic performance in dental school. The academic average (AA) of the DAT is a better predictor than is the perceptual ability test (PAT), but dental educators who believe that evidence of manual dexterity or perceptual ability must be a part of the admissions decision can find enough supporting evidence to justify doing so. When added to college GPA and the AA, information from the PAT may in fact enhance predictability. There is also evidence, however, that manual skills can be learned during routine dental curricular experiences. Overall, conventional admissions criteria at best account for about 40 percent of the variance in dental school performance, and most of this variance occurs during the early years of the curriculum. Studies are lacking for evaluating criteria that may predict success in admitting students for preferentially addressing current challenges, including achieving diversity of the workforce, ensuring access to care for all, interprofessional health care, ethics and professionalism, filling faculty positions, and conducting needed research. Schools should periodically validate all of their admissions criteria against expected performances and make corresponding adjustments. Date of Publication: Jul 2005 ISSN 1726-426X ABSTRACT Background: This study describes the lessons learnt from using a novel method for teaching communication skills to second-year medical/dental students. Methods: Medical and drama teachers designed this action research project to serve the educational interests of second-year medical/dental and drama students. The drama students enacted problematic doctor-patient scenarios for their forum theatre course. The interactive enactment was done for groups of 60-70 medical/dental students. The latter interrupted the actors to suggest improved communication skills. The drama students then re-enacted the scenarios, incorporating the improvements. The medical/dental students' knowledge of communication skills was assessed before the enactment, three weeks later, and again four months after that. Their semi-structured feedback was analysed thematically. In the next year, the feedback was used to improve the methodology for the new second-year students. Results: In both years, the medical/dental students' knowledge showed a statistically significant improvement after the enactment, and this was sustained for four months. In year 1, the feedback revolved around language problems and disrespectful attitudes. In year 2, visual cue cards of the communication skills were displayed during the act, and the drama students emphasised these rather than attitudinal problems. However, feedback showed that caricaturing the doctors' attitudes still detracted attention from the desired focus on communication skills. Conclusions: Although the forum theatre method can transfer knowledge of communication skills, the focus of the acting should be on the demonstration of inappropriate communication skills rather than inappropriate attitudes. One limitation of this study is that assessment was limited to knowledge and did not progress to skills. ABSTRACT This study is part of a trend of examining noncognitive predictors, for example, a situational judgment test (SJT), as supplements to cognitive predictors for making college admission decisions. The authors examined criterion data over multiple academic years and universities. The criterion domain was broadly conceptualized, including both cognitive and interpersonal domains. The sample consisted of 7,197 candidates of the Medical and Dental Studies Admission Exam in Belgium. Results confirmed the importance of cognitive predictors. A video-based SJT was differentially valid for predicting overall grade point average for different curricula. The SJT showed incremental validity over cognitively oriented measures for curricula that included interpersonal courses, but not for other curricula. The SJT became more valid through the years. This demonstrates the importance of carefully specifying predictor-criterion linkages and of differentiating both predictor and criterion constructs. ABSTRACT A variety of treatment philosophies persist concerning the need for coincidence of centric occlusion (CO) and maximum intercuspation (MI) in prosthodontic restoration; however, no consensus exists. The purpose of this study was to determine the philosophies of dental educators throughout the United States at both the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels and to compare their attitudes toward desirable maxillomandibular relationships in defined clinical situations. A survey was constructed with 5 clinical scenarios presented describing patients with a difference between maximum intercuspation and centric occlusion. The survey was mailed to 171 dentists involved in either predoctoral or postdoctoral dental programs in the United States; including 56 dental schools; the Army, Navy, and Air Force postdoctoral programs; 8 Department of Veterans Affairs postdoctoral programs; and 7 hospital-based programs. Descriptive statistics of the responses were provided. Chi-squared (α=.05) and Fisher's exact test analyses (α=.05) comparing predoctoral and postdoctoral program responses for each question were performed. Forty-three predoctoral dental school program responses were received. Forty-one postdoctoral program directors, including the dental school-based programs, 3 armed service branches, 2 Veterans Administration programs, and 1 hospital-based program responded to the survey. Fifteen respondents indicated that they represented both predoctoral and postdoctoral programs, and these data were deleted from the sample. Summarized results for each question reflect on whether the clinicians philosophically believed patients were better off with the elimination of an existing occlusal interference between MI and CO or not. There was no statistically significant difference seen between the predoctoral and postdoctoral responses. The controversy regarding the preferred mandibular position for treatment of dentulous and partially edentulous patients continues among dental educators at both the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels in the United States. Date of Publication: May 2003 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT Computer-aided learning (CAL), self-instructional programs provide an accessible, interactive, and flexible way of presenting curriculum material. In order to assess the effectiveness of CAL programs in dental education, a systematic review of the published literature comparing CAL with other teaching methods was performed. A systematic search of the published literature was performed. Articles formally assessed for inclusion had to meet the following criteria: randomized controlled trials comparing CAL with any other method of instruction, and the use of academically homogeneous dental students or dental professionals with objective, predefined outcome criteria measuring performance, time spent, and attitudes. The searches located a total of 1,042 articles; of these, only twenty-seven articles met the inclusion criteria. Further quality assessment identified twelve studies that were included in the final review. Five of the studies documented statistically significant differences in outcome measures (scores on multiple choice, written or oral tests, and clinical performance) favoring CAL over comparison group(s), while six revealed no statistically significant differences. One study documented a greater improvement in test scores in the seminar group over the CAL group. Participants' attitudes towards CAL in the included studies are also discussed. Our study concluded that CAL is as effective as other methods of teaching and can be used as an adjunct to traditional education or as a means of self-instruction. Date of Publication: Apr 2003 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT This paper proposes a shift of emphasis in the dental curriculum from measures to protect and improve the oral health of individuals to measures to protect and improve the oral health of the community or society. This shift represents a fundamental change in educational philosophy of the dental school. To illustrate this shift in emphasis, this paper describes a demonstration project to test the feasibility of this approach involving all seventy first-year students in the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry in a four-week experience placing dental sealants in erupting molars of second and sixth graders in fifty schools of the Cleveland City School System. In future years, the program is expected to reach all second and sixth graders in the Cleveland School System. The experience is a required integral component of the curriculum, involving every student in the class, and is designed to make a demonstrable difference in oral health in the City of Cleveland. The experience is reinforced with course material on professional responsibility. The school is developing additional intensive experiences for second-, third-, and fourth-year classes involving smoking prevention for adolescents, oral health maintenance for nursing home residents, and dental care delivery in the inner city. The initial year of the program has had effects on students' responses to other elements of the first-year curriculum that go beyond the experience of placing sealants in children's teeth. The focused efforts of dental students every year are expected to have a measurable effect on the disparities in oral health found in the City of Cleveland as well as a measurable effect on dental students' and dentists' attitudes concerning professional responsibility. Date of Publication: May 2002 ISSN 1396-5883 ABSTRACT In France, students have to choose between medical or dental courses, according to their rank, after a competitive examination at the end of their first year of study. Intellectual ability is evaluated, while manual competence is not, and this is a paradox. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether it is possible to predict the manual aptitude of a dental student through tests that allow the qualities of reflection and organization to be judged. We administered writing tests and drawing tests to 45 students of the Bordeaux dental school to ascertain whether there was a correlation between the competitive examination, the criterion examined (reflection, organization, aesthetics em leader) and the results of the dental practical assessments during the first year of dental study. The results showed that although manual competence in dental practical work, graphic qualities and writing skills are connected, it is difficult to correlate them directly with competitive examination performance. In view of the number of uncontrolled variables influencing the students' outcome, is it useful to be able to predict who will become a good practitioner? One indication may be found in the moral reasoning of candidates. Date of Publication: Feb 2002 ISSN 1029-4864 ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The changing oral health needs in South Africa require that both the teaching and clinical techniques of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) form a part of the restorative undergraduate curriculum. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to establish and compare the estimated costing of an amalgam, composite resin and ART restoration within the Board of Health Funders (BHF) recommended scale of benefits at the School of Oral Health Sciences Oral and Dental Hospital, University of the Witwatersrand (SOHS). METHODS: Fixed and variable costs were calculated by pricing items and equipment used in each procedure. The output values were established according to the recommended scale of benefits (BHF, 1999). This enabled the calculation of contribution margins and net income for each of the three restorations. RESULTS: The annual capital cost for the ART approach is approximately 50% of the other two options (e.g. per multiple surface restoration ART = R1.58; amalgam and composite resin restorative procedures: R3.12 and R3.10 respectively), despite the fact that ART restorations are rendered in a modern dental setting. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that implementation of the ART approach within the clinic setting of the SOHS can be accomplished without additional cost. Furthermore ART can be performed as an economically viable alternative to conventional treatment procedures within the clinic setting. The study represents a first step towards determining the cost efficiency of implementing ART as a pragmatic and cost-effective restorative option within the SOHS, University of the Witwatersrand. SOURCE Journal of the history of dentistry (2000) 48:3 (117-122). Date of Publication: Nov 2000 ISSN 1089-6287 ABSTRACT The search for a modern, humane method of criminal execution was triggered by a freak accident which occurred in Buffalo, New York in 1881. Dr. Alfred P. Southwick (a former steam-boat engineer, noted dentist and dental educator) happened to witness an intoxicated man die after he inadvertently touched a live generator terminal. Southwick's initial reaction was shock. Later, as he pondered this tragic event, he concluded that electrocution was, at least, a quick and seemingly painless way to depart from this earth. As his thoughts turned to common methods of capital punishment, Alfred concluded that death by electrocution could become a more humane alternative, as compared with the more grisly methods (e.g., hanging, beheading by guillotine, garroting, suffocation and flaying). Working through the governor of New York and the state legislature, Southwick originated and successfully promoted the passage of laws which mandated electrical executions in New York and in approximately 20 other states. During 1888-1889, Southwick served on the state's three-person Electrical Death Commission, a group who reported that electrical execution was superior to all other methods. On January 1, 1889, the world's first electrical execution law went into effect. On August 6, 1890, William Francis Kemmler, who had murdered his mistress, was the first person to die in the electric chair. However, this public event became an amateurish spectacle: the initial surge of current did not cause Kemmler's immediate death and a second jolt was needed. Those who witnessed this bungled execution were stunned. Graphic and detailed criticism from both the press and the general public ran high. However, Dr. Southwick vigorously continued to support and finally achieve his goal--to humanize capital punishment through the legal use of electrical execution. However, a comparatively small number of articles have had a disproportionately large influence on the progress and development of the specialty of endodontics. A survey of postgraduate program directors was conducted to attempt to identify a highly selective short list of articles that program directors felt should be included on every postgraduate reading list. The survey results were then compared with the more objective benchmark of citation indexing. The results of this survey suggest that the collective opinion of the postgraduate program directors correlates well with the results obtained from citation analysis. However, the dental profession has been slow to follow. Although some speakers have switched to computer-based presentations, slides are still the standard in 1998. With the advent of numerous new computer software programs, clinicians are now able to generate highly sophisticated slides, that can be an equally powerful medium to communicate with the audience. Unfortunately, many clinicians are not taking advantage of the benefits of this technology. Date of Publication: Dec 1996 ISSN 0709-8936 ABSTRACT The dental literature for the past 30 years, with emphasis on recent publications, was reviewed for articles on trends in dental education. A keyword search of the MEDLINE database identified 6,055 papers, from which those most likely to predict future trends are considered in this article. Particular emphasis is placed on the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences 1995 study, "Dental Education at the Crossroads: Challenges and Change." Reactions to this U.S.-based study are also detailed. Trends in curriculum analysis, curriculum change and reform, curriculum length, dental school financing, dental student costs, dental school and university relationships, dental school patient care, dental research, accreditation, oral health and trends from outside North America are documented. In addition, a series of predictions are made, and a brief bibliography of the 51 most relevant references is included. Date of Publication: 1994 ISSN 0195-6701 BOOK PUBLISHER W.B. Saunders Ltd, 32 Jamestown Road, London, United Kingdom. ABSTRACT The aim of this investigation was to study the possible emergence of resistant isolates of the genus Staphylococcus on the hands of dental personnel who use 'Hibiscrub' (chlorhexidine-detergent preparation) and cetyl pyridinium-coated gloves. Resistance was determined by a rate-of-kill technique. In four dental student groups (first, second, third and fourth years) no microorganisms survived 30 min exposure to cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) or to chlorhexidine diacetate (CDA). In a theatre staff group no microorganisms survived 30 s exposure to CPC; and only one of 23 isolates survived 30 min exposure to CDA, but was killed after 60 min exposure. It is concluded that staphylococci resistant to either of these disinfectants do not present a problem in dental students or theatre staff. Date of Publication: 1994 Spring ISSN 0195-8402 ABSTRACT This article presents a review of research in dental health education and health promotion. In the period 1982 to 1992, a total of 57 studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to alter individuals' behavior related to dental health were identified. Combining the results of these 57 studies with descriptive articles published over the same period, it appears that dental health education can result in improvements in objective measures of dental health behaviors and actual oral health measures, but has only limited success in changing attitudes towards dental issues and achieves only short-term gains in knowledge. The limited use of theoretical frameworks, poor statistical analyses, the use of convenient samples and the short post-intervention follow-up periods diminish the contribution of this research to the development of dental health policy and the formation of strategies to improve the health of communities. A play with messages relating to dental disease and its prevention was staged by school dental personnel for middle level primary schoolchildren. Feedback from the school staff indicated that the performance was well received and understood by the majority of the pupils. School dental personnel found that the awareness of dental disease and its prevention among their patients was generally more positive after the play. It thus appears that theatre is a useful medium for dental health education of young people. Date of Publication: Dec 1988 ISSN 0020-6539 ABSTRACT There are several factors in curriculum design of universal importance. Faculty members at all levels must be free to contribute but it must be recognized that decisions have to be made at department, school and university levels. Programme goals must be defined so that there is adequate education of dental practitioners and not just training for dental students. Preclinical teaching should not be an end in itself but should be closely relevant to clinical practice. Basic concepts must be taught; factual overload should be avoided and outdated material eliminated. The curriculum should meet local needs and not be based on one developed for another part of the world. In re-designing a curriculum, attention should be paid to new content, new teaching methods, the introduction of early clinical experience, evaluation methods and the effects of specialization in practice. Above all, curriculum revision must be an ongoing process. CORRESPONDENCE ADDRESS A.S. Blinkhorn, SOURCE Community dentistry and oral epidemiology (1979) 7:4 (195-198). Date of Publication: Aug 1979 ISSN 0301-5661 ABSTRACT General dental practitioners have an important role in the dissemination of information to their patients and their advice is often reinforced with written health education material. Unfortunately, this written information is often of limited value for particular groups of patients because of its level of readability. This investigation of the problem was in two parts; firstly, a group of 140 secondary schoolchildren were asked to explain the meaning of a selection of words in common use in dental health education, and secondly, the readability of some current dental health education literature was assessed using the Fog Index. The results indicate that current dental health education literature reflects the reading ability of the designers rather than the ability of the potential target group. Many of the words in the dental profession's preventive vocabulary were not understood by the children. Over 80% were unsure of the meaning of fluoride tablets, gum disease, gingivitis and oral hygiene. The results of this investigation indicate that dentists should ensure that dental health education literature is not unduly complex and should take more time explaining the dental vocabulary in lay terminology. AUTHOR ADDRESSES (Geller L.M.; Shemesh M.) CORRESPONDENCE ADDRESS L.M. Geller, SOURCE Journal of dental education (1979) 43:3 (159-164). Date of Publication: Mar 1979 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT The outcome of answer changes on multiple choice examination questions was studied in four groups. Roughly 80 percent of changes profited students or left final numbers of errors unaffected. The ratio of number of wrong to right changes/right to wrong changes ranged from 2.5:1 to 6.2:1. These changes deviated very significantly from chance expectations. The ratio of percent of changers profiting to losing ranged from 3.2:1 to 11.7:1. Revisions resulted in clearly significant decreases in prechange numbers of errors, leading to a mean gain per answer changer of 2.4 to 5.3 percent in test score. Findings were consistent with those of others gathered from different populations and disciplines. Together, they dispel the myth that changing initial responses more often is detrimental than beneficial. Students should be encouraged to review their examinations, and to change answers if they have reason. Chambers, SOURCE Journal of dental education (1977) 41:6 (290-300). Date of Publication: Jun 1977 ISSN 0022-0337 ABSTRACT Each dental school will fashion its own faculty evaluation system. The results will be a network of activities related to such questions as these: What are valid sources of information? Which aspects of instructors' responsibilities are most significant? Which questions need answers? How should the system be operated? This review has focused on what is currently being discussed and attempted in each of these critical areas. Faculty evaluation takes place in an essentially political context, and dental educators are now awakening to the political forces at work in the profession. Faculty evaluation is also a scientific process, or at least one capable of being greatly improved by rigorous, empirical study, which has yet to be performed. Finally, the exact form of faculty evaluation developed at each school will likely be unique, since it will depend on the institution's resources, size, funding base, academic affiliation, and the personal preferences of concerned individuals. The degree of success or failure of an evaluation system will depend on how the chosen combination of purposes, sources, objects of evaluation, and implementation strategy serves the needs of the school and its personnel.
