Language: English Abstract: Despite increasing interest on the part of minority undergraduates and a potentially expanded applicant pool, minority admissions to most health professional schools have remained static or fallen since 1974-75. Although women are being admitted to medical schools in increasing numbers, they still constitute less than thirty percent of the student population. Federal financial aid policy plays a role in perpetuating a bias against women and minorities by focusing funding on service commitment scholarships that are awarded without regard to financial need, race, or sex. The most affluent students receive, on the average, fourteen percent more than the poorest students. Affirmative action for minorities appears to succeed where affirmative action has also succeeded for women. However, a pattern of discrimination against women seems to be evident in southeastern medical and dental schools. The most important component of a successful affirmative action program is involvement of minority students and faculty in admissions and retention programs. Yet the percentage of minority faculty has not changed since 1971-72. Numbers of black and Puerto Rican faculty in medical schools have declined. Language: No language available Abstract: This paper reviews the literature on the use of dental auxiliaries (hygienists, assistants, and laboratory technicians). The dentist may increase his productivity by employing more auxiliaries and by delegating more tasks to them. Even though state laws and rules are becoming more liberal in allowing the dentist to delegate tasks to his auxiliaries, some restrictions on the use of hygienists and assistants still remain, with more revised laws prohibiting the delegation of restorations. Surveys of dentists have shown that while they appear to be receptive to the use of expanded duty assistants (EDA), they resist any delegation of technical duties because the dentists enjoy performing them. It may be that only when faced with an acute increase in demand for their services that dentists will be willing to increase the quantity of auxiliaries and to delegate more duties to them. This assumes that dentists will not be willing to work substantially greater hours in response to increased demand. Table 1 in the introduction shows that this has been the case in the past. Language: English Standard No: ISBN: ISBN-978-1-1095-5853-1 Abstract: This study investigates how heterosexuality is performed and achieved in everyday language use, specifically in personal ads from the Internet. Within personal ads, it focuses on the metaphors used by ad posters to articulate concepts of love, desire, gender and sexuality. The aim was to determine how the use of certain metaphors reflects ad posters' ideologies and models of heterosexuality and how they contribute to the preservation of heteronormativity. Analyzing the language used in personal ads contributes to determining the ideologies shared by the ad posters since it is very structured, formulaic and shared in the majority of the ads, creating a genre where similar linguistic and semantic features are constantly repeated. This iterability allows an examination of how posters express individual desires in a manner determined by social rules. These rules are established by the ideologies shared by their community, and analyzing their language use allows the uncovering of the ideologies behind it. The personal ads analyzed originated from a dating website that serves Spanish speakers. The selection used in this study came from five different countries: USA, Venezuela, Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. The data analyzed included a total of 2000 ads, 400 hundred ads from each country, and from this selection 200 were of women looking for men and 200 hundred of men looking for women. Using a Critical Metaphor Analysis approach, five hundred and seventy five metaphors were identified, classified and analyzed. These metaphors were related to love, relationships, desire and gender and were classified in twelve conceptual metaphors, as well as a category called "label metaphors." The results of this study show that most ad posters use traditional metaphors of love and relationships to circulate ideologies that contribute to the maintenance of traditional gender roles and heterosexual hegemony. At the same time, some metaphors used by posters attempted to challenge and reinvent the system. Posters attempted to reinvent the system when they used innovative metaphors to oppose traditional values and portray themselves as not abiding by traditional heterosexual norms. In addition, the results of this research indicate that ad posters use metaphors to articulate the notion of gender as a performance showing that they are aware, up to a certain point, of this performativity. Some researchers have suggested that replicating a group's recommended cut score on a full-length test may be possible by using a subset of the items. However, these studies were based on simulated data. This study describes a standard setting application using two independent panels providing judgments on a 300-item licensure test. Specifically, one panel provided judgments on all 300 items; whereas the second panel made judgments on a randomly-selected subset of 150 items. Both panels also participated in an alternate standard setting method to evaluate panel comparability. Results suggest caution for practitioners considering using subsets of items for standard setting studies. (Contains 4 tables and 1 footnote.) FT offers an accessible, interactive approach to exploring challenging topics and situations. In FT, a short scene is performed. It is then replayed again and again with audience members invited to intervene and offer different options for addressing various aspects of the problematic situation. Originally directed to helping people address and transform oppressive conditions that characterized their lives, FT has evolved and found expression in many different communities and contexts, including health professional education. Inspired by David Diamond's (2008) "Theatre for Living" model (which approaches living communities as a complex, living entities), we introduced FT in the "Introduction to Medicine & Dentistry" (DMED 511) course offered as part of the Undergraduate Medical Education program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD). In this article, we describe how we have successfully engaged first year medical and dental students in discussion and critical reflection of professionalism issues relevant to their experiences of small group learning using FT. The ability of background music (BM) to enhance the cognitive abilities of students is well documented. The present study was designed to investigate the impact of BM in the CDL and on stress associated with the dissection experience. After 8 wk of normal dissection without BM, various genres of BM were introduced into the cadaver dissection sessions of 260 medical and dental students for 3 wk. Feedback on the impact of BM on students in the CDL and students' attitude were accessed using a questionnaire. Psychological stress assessment was done using Psychological Stress Measure 9. Two batches of 30 students each were made to dissect same areas of the body for 2 h, one batch with BM playing and the other batch without. The same examination was given to both groups at the end. Over 90% of the participants expressed a desire to incorporate BM into the CDL; 87% of the sampled population that expressed love for music also reported BM to be a very useful tool that could be used to enhance learning conditions in the CDL. A strong positive relationship was established between love for music and its perception as a tool for learning in the CDL (P < 0.001). Students that studied under the influence of BM had significantly higher scores (P < 0.001) in the overall examination result. BM reduced the level of stress associated with the dissection experience by ~33%. An effective assessment tool should be both valid and reliable, yet this is often not achieved. The aim of this literature review is to identify and appraise the evidence base for assessment tools used primarily in evaluating clinical skills of dental students. Methods: MEDLINE was searched for all relevant articles from January 1950-January 2011 published in the English language. References of the articles were then hand searched. This review begins with a brief outline of the student learning process and the aim of assessment. The tools available for both formative and summative assessments are discussed, with particular reference to those used in assessing dental students' clinical ability. The problems of subjectivity and assessor variability associated with traditional teacher-led assessments are highlighted. Methods which have attempted to overcome these problems, such as the use of checklists and training are then discussed. The benefits and shortcomings of the use of students as assessors, both in self and peer assessment are reviewed. Finally, the use of objective assessment methods involving opto-electronic and haptic technology is considered. Language: English Abstract: Seven case illustrations of affirmative action (AFA) programs are presented. Increases in the numbers of women and minority students at professional schools have been reported, but disadvantaged populations still suffer underrepresentation. The literature indicates that effective AFA may be realized through: early identification programs and pre-professional contact during recruitment; role modeling and mentoring used from early identification through professional licensure; resocialization techniques for both faculty and students used after matriculation; and academic, social, and psychological support services used during the program to enhance retention. A survey of law, medical, dental, and veterinary schools revealed various AFA strategies used for the recruitment, admission, and retention of women and minorities. Data for the seven case studies included responses by AFA officers to a nine-item mail questionnaire. The survey examined enrollment, graduate, and licensure rates for women and minority students as well as recruitment, admission, and retention strategies used to facilitate AFA. The results are based on the responses of personnel from 10 medical, 10 veterinary, 11 dental, and 24 law schools. The case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of a concise, directed program of strategies complementary to the professional school, its faculty, their geographic location, their targeted clientele, and their specific goals for cultural diversity. A 38-item list of references and three data tables are included.
