In this paper I will describe and compare some of the main aspects of industrial relations in British and French colonial territories in West Africa, using French West Africa and the Gold Coast (now Ghana) as units of comparison. The focus is on the period before independence, roughly the years between World War II and the late 1950s. I will try to explain the nature and sources of the differences in the two areas and will comment briefly on some longer-term implications of these differences.en_US
