Spring beauty is a lovely perennial wildflower that grows in moist, rich northern hardwood forests. Native peoples of Michigan were known to use two species of spring beauty, Claytonia virginica and Claytonia caroliniana in traditional foods and medicines. These spring ephemerals also play an important, though not fully understood ecological role despite their short growing season.en_US
