The goal of this project is to further develop a ball feeding device to be installed in a new practice facility for our sponsor the University of Michigan’s Varsity Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams. An interview with men’s varsity Coach John Paul, yielded several main requirements. First, the machine should be able to simulate realistic play, including throws and bounce shots, by being able to launch lacrosse balls at changeable speeds (between 40 and 100 mph), directions (covering a 30x30 yard room), angles (horizontal range of ±60° from the center and vertical range of ±30° from the horizontal), and frequencies. Moreover, to enable useful single player practice, the device should be easy to set-up, automated via a user-friendly interface, and contain up to 80 lacrosse balls in a hopper. Lastly, safety for the players and the device must be considered by incorporating warning lights, emergency stops and sensors, and a durable shield for the machine.en_US
