dc.description | World War I in the Middle East was a humanitarian disaster of unprecidented scale. It was in the aftermath of this catastrophe that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey and U-M staff photographer George Robert Swain embarked on an expedition to the region, the purpose of which was to collect ancient Christian manuscripts destined to disappear in the postwar chaos. | |
