dc.description | This laboratory course, designed by U-M student James Peyer, gives high school students a first glimpse of the common technique of cloning, which is used by scientists to genetically engineer proteins and organisms. This course also familiarizes them with the incredible history of these fundamental tools. Students get the opportunity to use these tools of biology to genetically engineer the bacteria E. coli to express Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). ¶ The course includes handbooks for students and teachers, as well as a lab guide. In addition, two videos supplement the student lab manual and another series of 7 short videos introduce teachers to the concepts in the lab, and walk them through setting up and running the course. | |
