Based on the proximity and interconnectedness of these issues and the impact of these specific issues in Flint, there lies opportunities for improving public health outcomes by positively affecting literacy, improving resident perceptions of law enforcement, and improving public safety. The University of Michigan - Flint Department of Public Safety (UM-Flint DPS) has recently developed an innovative program which attempts to holistically and collaboratively address core issues of both crime and literacy, called "Read with a Cop." The program is intended to improve public safety and build relationships between residents and UM-Flint police officers, as well as address important literacy needs in the community by encouraging youth to read and increasing their access to books. The program included a weekly summer reading session for youth in July and August 2017 at a neighborhood community room in River Village apartments in Flint, Michigan. In addition, UM-Flint DPS installed and maintained a free little library in the neighborhood for resident youth.
