Local television news has been broad casting in to American house holds since the 1950s. What began as a 15 minute newscast, grew to become the most popular source of information in just about every city. In the 1970s, local television news boomed in to a profitable business. Even universities started to include broadcast journalism in their academic curriculums. The networks, by the 1980s, found local television news to be dangerous competition. However, an irony lives behind all of the success, which local television news has achieved. The irony is that local television news lacks the respect due to a serious journalist.
