Abstract

Lecture – Recital. “Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata in G Major, Op.78, D.894 (‘Fantasy’).” Sunday, February 22, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. in Walgreen Drama Center, Stamps Auditorium. The lecture studied Schubert’s sonata in terms of the diversity of influences and the variety of moods and styles. The presentation demonstrated aspects of the pastoral genre, connections with nature and Viennese nineteenth-century song and dance associations. The complete work was performed. 2. Pedagogy Workshop. “The Pedagogy of Isidor Philipp Seen Through His Writings, Compositions and Students.” Sunday, March 29, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. in Walgreen Drama Center, Stamps Auditorium. The presentation explored the life, heritage and piano method of Isidor Philipp. Discussed in detail were Philipp’s exercises (excerpts from Exercises for the Development of the Higher Pianoforte Technic, Exercices Quotidiens tirés des Oeuvres de Chopin and Complete School of Technic for the Pianoforte) and their execution, demonstrated in projected video recordings. In addition audio recordings of Philipp’s solo compositions and his own playing were shown. The presentation was accompanied by a written document. 3. Recital. Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. in Walgreen Drama Center, Stamps Auditorium. The program consisted of works from three style periods: Classical, Romantic and early twentieth-century Impressionism. The first half of the recital consisted of: Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI: 23 by Joseph Haydn and Estampes (L.100) by Claude Debussy. The second half of the program consisted of: three Mazurkas by Fryderyk Chopin- Op.33, No. 1 and 2, and Op.50, No.3; Chopin’s Nocturne Op.62, No.2 and Franz Liszt’s Ballade No.2 in B Minor, S.171.
