Dental Hygiene Students’ Experience in Service-Learning as an Indicator of a Career Choice in Community Dentistry

dc.description.abstractPurpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in service-learning has an effect on dental hygiene students choosing a career in community dentistry. A secondary goal was to determine if the frequency in participation and the type of service-learning has an effect on choosing a career in community dentistry. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study utilized a convenience sample of entry-level dental hygiene students in the State of Michigan. Directors of the programs were given one of three survey distribution options: in-person paper survey, mailed paper surveys, or electronic surveys. The evaluation instrument that was utilized was a 15-question survey asking students questions regarding demographics, perceptions on working with underserved populations, and future career choices. Chi-square test of independence and ANOVA was used to compare data. Results: Data analysis revealed that the type of service-learning plays a significant role. Findings show that outreach rotations lasting multiple consecutive days was a determining factor in students wanting to work with underserved populations. Additionally, data revealed that students’ perceptions on working with underserved populations, such as their confidence level, comfort level, and enjoyment level, has an effect on future career choice. Conclusion: The results revealed that outreach programs have a lasting effect on dental hygiene students wanting to work in low access areas. Dental and dental hygiene programs can use this information and incorporate more outreach programs into their curricula. In addition, curricula can also focus on other career pathways, knowing that many students want to pursue other career goals.en_US
