dc.description.abstract | This dissertation focuses on Quevedo'a Silvas, a series of thirty-four poems modelled after Statius' Silvae. Its purpose is twofold: to offer both an overall characterization of the collection and a detailed examination and edition of selected individual poems. Thus, the first half of the dissertation concerns itself with the definition, identification and description of the Silvas as a series. Chapter I presents a comprehensive review of the extensive bibliography on Quevedo's poetry. Chapter II traces the classical antecedents of Quevedo's poems, chronicles the semantic evolution of the term silva, and concludes that Quevedo, like Statius, applied it to a composition of varied content without reference to its metrical form. Chapter III investigates the relationship between the Silvas, the epideictic tradition, and the Greek epigram. Chapters IV and V are devoted to the textual and bibliographical study of all the manuscripts and early printed editions of the Silvas and to the generation of stemmata illustrative of the genealogical relationship between the textual sources. Chapters VI through X are dedicated to an in-depth study and critical edition of the following poems: A la soberbia, Al sueno, A una mina, A Roma Antigua y Moderna, and A una nave. Each chapter consists of an introductory section where topics, rhetorical dispositio and source are discussed; a textual study (recensio, examinatio and constitutio textus); and a critical edition of the poem followed by the critical apparatus and notes. The dissertation also includes three appendices: a chart that shows the distribution of the poems contained, and the nomenclature used, in each of the twenty textual sources; photographic reproductions of the first page of two editions of Las Tres Musas; and the stemmata of all the Silvas. | |
