Professor Green's involvement with music has continued for more than seventy-five years, and her teaching career spans more than fifty of those years. Before she was old enough to establish educational and professional goals, the precepts that would govern her life were instilled in her by her parents, Albert Wingate Green, a violinist and music educator, and Mary Timmerman Green, a trained nurse. Their impact upon her was such that an investigation of her life must necessarily contain an abstract of theirs. Thus, Chapter I of this study briefly explores Albert and Mary Green's life during the period before Elizabeth was born. In addition, Elizabeth Green's early years at home with her parents, her public school education in Chicago and Wheaton (Illinois), and her undergraduate college experiences are discussed here. Since her first teaching assignment at age thirteen, Professor Green's primary concern has been the optimal musical growth of each of her students. This characteristic of her teaching, coupled with the high personal st and ards and the unique quality of humaneness that she brought to her teaching, has motivated her pupils to strive toward personal levels of excellence. Her fourteen-year teaching career in the public schools of East Waterloo, Iowa is discussed in Chaper II, and her tenure with the Ann Arbor Public Schools and The University of Michigan is explored in Chapter III. Throughout her life, Professor Green has been involved in exp and ing her general education, musical expertise, and performance skills in order to provide quality education for her students. This zeal for learning is discussed in Chapter IV. Included here are details of her study with Jacques Gordon, Clarence Evans, Nicolai Malko, and Ivan Galamian. This chapter also explores her trips to Russia and France. The final chapter is devoted to Professor Green's activities since retirement in 1974. The Appendix provides an examination of Professor Green's more than fifty contributions to the literature of music education, particularly in the domains of conducting technique, and string technique and performance.
