Supersonic aircraft, or aircraft that travel faster than the speed of sound, are restricted from flying over the United States because of the loud (and potentially destructive) sonic booms they produce. Concorde is arguably the most famous commercial supersonic aircraft, and before being retired in 2003, it was able to fly between New York and London in approximately three hours. My research capstone examines the feasibility of using supersonic aircraft on overland routes. Specifically, my objective was to optimize the LAX - JFK flight route such that the number of people exposed to sonic booms is minimized.
