Abstract

This project focused on the creation of a deck design to fit with the existing structure of the Chrysler Building on the University of Michigan Campus. The design process included estimation of loading, analysis of existing capacity based on original structural plan, solution ideation and conceptual design, iterative design refinement and analysis, and a final detailed design. Three design options were created at the conceptual phase: a cantilever, an existing-structure-supported structure, and a hybrid cantilever-supported option. All three options were modeled in Revit and analyzed based on economic, constructability, and structural efficiency criteria. The hybrid option was the most viable based all criteria. The hybrid structure was selected for final design detailing including girder connection detailing. Further detailing of the hybrid structure is required to produce construction plans for the structure. The design should also be reviewed with a construction manager to maximize constructability and cost efficiency.
