Survey of Vehicle Controls and Displays

Abstract

FMVSS 101 addresses vehicle controls and displays and was last updated in 2005. We surveyed 40 newer passenger vehicles to identify how vehicle manufacturers are implementing controls and displays related to new technologies not currently addressed by FMVSS 101. A general comparison of infotainment systems and instrument clusters across manufacturers is included. In addition, the report includes a detailed comparison of the controls and displays related to transmissions, drive modes, blind spot warning, traction control, cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-related assistance, and parking brakes. Samples of controls and displays related to hybrid or electric functions are included, as well as a list of technologies that are available but not covered in the report. Manufacturers are implementing many new displays and controls not currently addressed by FMVSS 101. Manufacturers do not use consistent terminology for similar functions, making it challenging to identify differences and similarities across products.
