From 1964 to 1984, the US went through a time of turmoil with riots, racial problems, the Vietnam War and its aftermath, and wide fluctuations in support for the Democratic and Republican parties. An other element was the third party candidacy of George Wallace, with its racial, segregationist overtones. The book tries to explain voting and party identification fluctuations in this period, it finds that new issues -- racial and social -- explain defection from the Democratic party to support for Republicans and George Wallace.en_US
