dc.description.abstractThis project develops a functional prototype of a visual sensor and actuator mechanism combination in order to allow automatic adjustment of the seat belt D-ring for different sizes of occupants in consumer vehicles. Our goal is to allow occupants of much larger height and BMI ranges to comfortably, autonomously, and safely reconfigure their seatbelt locations to provide much needed comfort. Following the development of a mechanism, the team has created plans to program the actuator controller to accept input from the visual sensor system regarding the anthropometry of the occupant in order to reposition the shoulder belt to its optimal location.
