dc.description.abstract | This presentation was part of a 2021-2022 ICPSR Metadata & Preservation unit "Deep Dive" Webinar series for ICPSR staff. The presentation abstract: Metadata are essential to finding and understanding ICPSR’s data and are embedded throughout the ICPSR pipeline. The depositor uses fielded metadata in the deposit form to describe her data collection. The ICPSR project manager, curator, and other staff clean and enhance the metadata based on standards. The metadata archivist (Jay Winkler) reviews and enhances metadata as part of the quality control process. Users search the metadata to find the right data for their needs. Libraries and search engines harvest our metadata to populate their own catalogs and search engines -- extending the reach of the data. This presentation will discuss the “what,” “why,” and “how” of metadata, including: -What are the steps of the ICPSR metadata workflow? -Why use metadata standards instead of just creating our own? -What steps does the metadata archivist take as part of the quality control process, and how do they help? -Why does ICPSR use the particular metadata we have? -How and why does ICPSR share our metadata? -How does metadata impact data users? | en_US |
