Short article intended for middle school and high school students about Jane Addams' work to clean up the Hull House neighborhood. This provides an example of women's breaking into politics under the argument of "municipal housekeeping."en_US
Jane Addams’ work to improve living and working conditions for low-income people made her one of the most influential social reformers and famous women in the twentieth century. Through her work to prevent war she became the first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Reading about outstanding leaders like Jane Addams can inspire us to do great things. It can also intimidate us; we ask ourselves “How could I ever accomplish such things?” This short story tells of a less well-known aspect of Jane Addams’ legendary career. It shows us that making unglamorous, but important improvements in our own neighborhood can help make the world a better place.en_US
