This project will design and build a system to safely test the corrosion resistance of various coatings and materials in an office environment. MISUMI Japan has tested common materials using this testing method, and we aim with this project to expand this to a broader range. This multi-disciplinary project will require the building and programming of a salt fog chamber that is capable of safely running in an office environment without generating excessive noise, and can run without monitoring over long weekends of 3 to 4 days. The chamber should conform to JIS H8502 testing standard or ANSI equivalent. Project includes aspects of machine design, fluids, and controls. The design should use MISUMI parts where feasible, such as aluminum extrusions for the frame, while sourcing other components cost-effectively. The system, used by engineers to test small parts, must be quiet, safe, non-polluting, and capable of running unattended for up to 96 hours. Design challenges include containing corrosive fog, providing access for specimens, and managing waste water recycling or disposal.
