Laparoscopic surgery is a less invasive procedure than open surgery and is often used to remove masses from inside the abdomen. The main goal of this project is to create a low-cost specimen retrieval device for laparoscopic OB/GYN surgery in low-resource settings. We are working with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana where cost and reusability are serious concerns. Currently at Korle Bu, multiple physicians are required to hold the device open in the patient's abdominal cavity during surgery, complicating the procedure. Specimen spillage is a major issue and can expose both the doctor and patient to health risks.
