dc.description.abstract | The Joe Louis Greenway (JLG) is a central part of Detroit’s response to major economic and social shifts, from industrial growth to decline and disinvestment. This multi-phase redevelopment initiative aims to revitalize the city, expand access to green space, and reconnect communities. However, concerns exist about whether these projects will be broadly beneficial. Urban greening initiatives have historically contributed to gentrification and displacement, making equitable access a key issue. This project evaluated the first phase of the JLG, assessing its effectiveness in promoting transportation equity and community engagement. We used a multi-method approach, combining digital monitoring, community engagement, and environmental design strategies. A web-based system was developed to visualize spatial data, collect user feedback, and enhance accessibility. Community surveys, including intercept interviews and a city-wide survey, assessed public perceptions and demographics. Additionally, we explored climate-responsive landscape designs to optimize the greenway’s resilience and usability. Our research provided evidence-based recommendations to improve accessibility, sustainability, and inclusivity. By combining data-driven analysis with community input, we aimed to broaden knowledge and perspectives that could contribute to subsequent greenway planning.
